Sheriff: Toenyan, father not wearing life jackets
The man who died Sunday in Little Sandy Lake was with his father at the time of the accident. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.
According to a press release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office:
Wayne Paul Toenyan, 45, of Bemidji, was fishing with his father, Lawrence Michael Toenyan, 76, of Bemidji, in a canoe on Little Sandy Lake when the canoe capsized at about 6:35 p.m. Sunday in Roosevelt Township.
Lawrence Toenyan stayed with the capsized boat and was rescued by Bruce Aasen, 56, a resident along Little Sandy Lake. Wayne Toenyan died at the scene and his body was recovered by the Beltrami County deputies.
Lawrence Michael Toenyan was treated at North Country Regional Hospital for hypothermia and released.
The cause and manner of death is pending results of an autopsy that has been conducted at North Country Regional Hospital.
