Sheriff candidates raise $35,000

The two candidates for Beltrami County sheriff have raised $35,000 for their war chests, according to campaign finance reports filed with Beltrami County Auditor/Treasurer Kay Mack.

Wadena County Chief Deputy Bill Cross raised about $7,000 more than current Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp, and Cross has more contributors of more than $100 -- 36 -- than Hodapp -- 14.

The reports from the sheriff's race overwhelm that of the only other Beltrami County government contested race, that of county commissioner for the 1st District.

There, Commissioner Jack Frost reports no contributions and $757.17 in expenses. Challenger Sally Fineday reports $1,343 in contributions and $889.41 in expenses.

With $100 the threshold for reporting individual contributions, Fineday reported four such donors: Womenwinning State PAC, St. Paul, $300; Martin Jennings, Onamia, $200; Robert Treuer, Bemidji, $150; Carolyn Jacobs, Puposky, $200.

Sheriff Phil Hodapp reported raising $14,405.64 for his campaign through Oct. 22. He reported spending $11,442.49, the largest involving campaign radio advertising at about $3,800.

Hodapp received $5,367.57 from a September fund-raiser and $1,607 from a silent auction.

Hodapp defeated Cross in 2006 to fill the vacancy left by Sheriff Keith Winger's retirement.

Cross reported $21,260.20 in contributions, with 36 giving more than $100. He reported spending $17,328,20 in the report through Oct. 22. It includes $5,704.84 for print and radio advertising and $1,000 for a billboard.
