Senior Activity Center offers new opportunities
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

If you have always wanted to learn the art of wood carving now is your chance. The Wood Carving Club will be offering "Wood Carving 101" for beginners at the Paul Bunyan Senior Activity Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, and is encouraging people to come see what wood carving is all about.

Colleen Hilts, a club member, said there are people in the community who are interested in learning more about this art, so the club decided to provide an opportunity.

The cost of attending this wood carving class for beginners is $8, which includes the cost of the materials. To be included in this class, register and make your payment at the Senior Center front desk by Friday, Feb. 12. For more information call 751-8836.

Valentine's dance

Celebrate Valentine's Day by joining us at the PBSAC from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14. The musical group "Old Friends" will play music for dancing or listening enjoyment. Refreshments will be offered. A free will donation is appreciated.

Boys & Girls Club

The other day, I stopped in at the Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area just to look around. It was about 4:30 pm. The place was really buzzing, but Darcy Douglas, a staff member, said, "It's actually kind of slow today. Usually there are at least 125 kids here at this time. Today there are about 80."

Something was going on in every area. Everyone was doing something, and there was plenty of talking and laughing. I was especially interested in the new Teen Center and was happy to see that the pool table the Senior Center donated to the club was very much in use.

So, if you have a chance stop by the B&G Club around 4-54 p.m. someday, take a tour and see the program in action. I'm sure you will be as impressed as I was.

Tax preparation

The PBSAC, AARP, IRS, and Minnesota Revenue will again sponsor their yearly tax assistance program for seniors and low income individuals.

Tax Preparation Counselors will be available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from Jan. 25 through April 15 to provide assistance on a first come, first serve basis. Although there is no charge for this service, donations to the Center are much appreciated.

Individuals not receiving a tax refund or those who come in only for rent rebates are encouraged to wait until March. Rent rebates are not processed by Minnesota Revenue until August; therefore, there would be no delay in rent rebate checks being mailed.

To assist in the preparation of the federal, state and property tax refunds, counselors will need copies of all forms of income including W-2s from employment, Social Security 1099s, Interest and Dividends 1099s, Pension 1099s, Unemployment Benefits, Public Assistance Information, and documentation of any forms of income.

Quarterly tax documentation and the previous year's tax returns are also needed. If applying for a renter's credit a Certificate of Rent Paid is needed. If in doubt, bring all information as it may save you a trip home.

Note: Tax Assistance will not be available on Feb. 15 and April 2 because the Center will be closed for holidays.

Many thanks to Ralph Brose and his many faithful volunteers for this very valuable program. For details, call PBSAC at 751-8836 or visit
