Section finals ahead in high school basketball playoffs
The field for the state boys basketball tournament will be completed this week with the 32 section meets coming to a close.
The 8-4A title will be decided at St. Cloud State Thursday when St. Cloud Tech and Buffalo come to grips.
The pair have met once this year with Buffalo prevailing 55-52 in that game.
Tech beat SMA 59-58 and Buffalo ousted Elk River 58-52 in the semifinals.
Tech won last year's title from the Bison 61-60.
In 8-3A, Apollo and Little Falls clash Thursday at 5 at SCSU, again a rematch of the 2009 final won by the Flyers 63-62.
Little Falls eliminated Bemidji 65-43 and Apollo ousted Rocori 54-50 to reach the final.
The 8-2A semifinals are set for tonight with East Grand Forks at Thief River and Hawley at Crosby -Ironton.
Those winners come to BSU for their title game Friday at 7.
Crosby ended Pequot Lakes season 62-53 and Hawley won over Perham 57-59 in the south semifinals.
In the north, East Side stopped Bagley 77-71 and Thief River defeated Red Lake 59-52 to advance.
Pelican Rapids beat Crosby 74-48 in last year's title game.
Crosby and Hawley have not met this year, EGF and TRF split, the Prowlers taking the second game decisively .
In 8A, games at Thief River tonight mat h Cass Lake-Bena with Mahnomen for the east championship and Northern Freeze with Warren for the west.
The title game is Friday at the same site. Cass Lake beat Warren 89-62 in last year's title game.
It is facing Mahnomen for the first time this year.
In 6A, sub-section semifinals tonight find Ada meeting NCW at Concordia and Hillcrest Academy taking on Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at UM-Morris.
The title game is at Concordia Friday 7.
Ada swept West by 5 and 15 in their head to head meetings this winter.
The 7-4A semifinals are at Elk River tonight when Duluth East tangles with Coon Rapids in the opener and Anoka meets Forest Lake in the nightcap.
The 7-3A title in on the line at Duluth East tonight when Grand Rapids and Cloquet collide.
The 24-2 Rapids beat Cloquet 65-51 in their season opener and 84-31 in a late season game.
It beat the Lumberjacks 65-51 in last year's title game.
In 5A, upstart Nevis takes on Sebeka in the west sub-section final while Barnum and Isle meet for the east title.
Sebeka beat the Tigers 62-48 in their regular season meeting. But the Tigers are fresh from knocking off another state ranked team, Bertha-Hewitt 60-49 in the last round .
In 7A, semifinals pit AlBrook and Floodwood from the south and Chisholm and Mesabi East from the north.
They will cross bracket tonight for the semi finals. Chisholm beat MIB 80-63 in last year's title game.
The 7-2A semis will go Wednesday at UMD with Braham facing Rush City for the south half title and Virginia taking on Deer River for the north.
That final is Friday at the same site. Virginia beat Braham in last year's final 78-71.
