Second round of Blackduck administrator interviews held

The second round of interviews for the city administrator position in Blackduck were held on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Blackduck Golf Course.

Two candidates were returning from the first round and one was appearing in front of the council for the first time.

The two candidates who were interviewed for the second time were Christina Regas and Deanne Stai-Johnson.

Regas took a seat in front of the council first and was asked about working with groups and her experience with making final decisions.

Regas said that her experience at Office Max, where she has worked for 14 years let her see a lot of different personalities who all have good ideas, but she has no problem with ultimately making decisions.

She said that recently her title at Office Max has changed from manager to team leader, which was her answer when the council asked if she considered herself more of a coach or a commander when in charge.

Regas said that part of her plan in moving to Blackduck was so her son could be more involved at school and with activities. She said that if she did get the position it would allow her to be more involved in the community as well.

The council asked Regas where she saw herself in five to 10 years and her response was neck deep in the Blackduck community.

“I would love to be that person who really makes this town grow a lot more,” Regas said.

The next candidate in front of the council was Stai-Johnson. She said that while working for the Internet company that she is currently employed by she has had to motivate staff members while making a major transition within their company.

Stai-Johnson said she plans on volunteering in the community if she gets the position. She said that she has volunteered for Meals on Wheels in the past and also in nursing homes.

Stai-Johnson would like to return to her roots of a small town. She told the council that was how the position would fit into her career path and that she also enjoys working for the government.

Her experience in government includes working as an Air Force Auditor in Little Rock, Ark.

Stai-Johnson did some research and said that the average age in Blackduck is 39. She said that she is young and will be able to relate to the different generations.

The final candidate was Tina Hendrickson, who is currently employed by the city of Baudette.

The council asked her a mix of questions from the first and second round of interviews.

In her current position she works with electric, water, sewer and garbage in Baudette. Her experience with making final decisions involves choosing which residents would have their utilities turned off.

Hendrickson said that she had to put herself in other’s shoes in a lot of situations.

She said that prioritizing would be an important part of the position if she were to get it. Rules are also important to her and she also said that teamwork can make working a lot better.

The council asked her about her career path and Hendrickson said that the position fits perfectly with what she wants to do.

The council will make their decision and vote on it at their regular city council meeting in February.

Current city administrator, Karin Elhard, has said that she will be present during the transition and that she is willing to work with whomever takes over her position.
