Season ends for BHS girls soccer
The East Grand Forks Green Wave wrote an end to the Bemidji girls soccer season Thursday, handing Bemidji a 2-0 setback on the Green Wave's field.
The two goals matched the fewest scored in a single game all year by the unbeaten Lakes to Prairie Conference champs.
That came in a 2-1 win over Moorhead.
Bemidji went down with its heads high, completing a .500 season at 9-9-1.
It is the first time it has attained that status since 2005 when Bemidji ended a nine-year string of winning years.
"We played very well the whole day," said coach Kelly Schoonover. We aimed to shut down Jaclyn Scanlan and Francie Piche, the two East Side scoring leaders, and for the most part we did with Piche held scoreless and Scanlan limited to an assist."
That came on the opening goal at the 36 minute mark, scored by Brooks Greenwood.
East Side held a 13-1 lead in shots on goal in the period with Nicole Ramos providing great protection in the net.
She faced 12 more in the second half while Bemidji again managed only one.
Its chances faded at the 65 minute mark when it drew a red card and played with 10 players the last 15 minutes.
The final goal came at 70 minutes with Dani Pickard converting a Greenwood feed.
Ramos ended her fine career with 23 saves ,a figure exceeded only by Detroit Lakes, Brainerd and St. Cloud Tech.
Chelsey Grassel had just two saves for the winners.
The win sends the Wave to the section semifinals to face the No. 2 team from the south, possibly Sartell. The top south team, Apollo, will face the No. 2 team from the north. The final will be Oct. 22 at 7:30 at St. Cloud State.Bemidji will graduate seven seniors including Ramos. midfielders Bronwyn Boyd. the team's scoring leader, and Karissa Barthorpe and four members of the solid defense, Annie Swartz, Olivia Hruby ,Megan Chmielewski and Emily Larson.
The team banquet has been set for Monday, Oct. 26 at the 1st Lutheran Church Parish Hall at 6 p.m.
