An investigation is underway by the Bemidji School Employees Association Executive Board of suspected embezzlement by one of its own, according to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office.

The Board is reviewing a matter in which a person, who had access to the BSEA unit dues checking account, may have used the money for personal expenses instead of for BSEA expenses.

BSEA is a unit under its parent group, the Minnesota School Employees Association, which is a union of more than 6,000 classified school employees in over 55 school districts in Minnesota. MSEA provides services and resources in negotiating contracts, processing grievances and arbitrations, leadership training and legislative lobbying and monitoring.

Members of the Bemidji MSEA include custodians, drivers, and secretaries and paraprofessionals.

"We are handling the situation internally," said MSEA executive director Christina Clark in a telephone interview from St. Paul. "I would hope that the public would respect the MSEA and know we are handling this as quickly as we can."

No charges have been filed.
