Halloween Carnival set

Blackduck High's student council will be hosting the annual Halloween Carnival Oct. 31 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the school multi-purpose room. All children are invited to attend. There will be lots of games and prizes and a costume contest. Tickets to play the games are 25¢ each and it costs one ticket to play a game.

Scholarship information

The following scholarships available in the high school office:

Prudential Spirit of Community Award: All students who volunteer in their communities. Apply online at http:// spirit.prudential.com. Deadline is Nov. 1.

AXA Achievement Scholarship: Seniors who are active in their community, have led a project that benefits others and overcome personal challenges. Apply online at www.axa-achievement.com. Deadline is Dec. 15.

Sports Schedule

Tuesday: Junior high and varsity volleyball at home against Indus at 5 p.m.

Community Ed

Beaded Rosettes will be held Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The fee is $12.

Arrowhead will be held Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. The fee is $12.

Ceramic Pumpkin Plate will be held Oct. 26 and Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The fee is $20.

Wednesday Night Volleyball is held at 7 p.m. The fee is $3.

What's Happening

Chili Cook-Off

Everyone is welcome to the First Annual Chili Cook-Off Nov. 13 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Northome Community Building on Main Street.

Chili contestants should sign up with Angel and the muni by Nov. 8. Categories include taster's choice, hottest and most unique.

All proceeds go to the Northome Area Food Shelf.

No school Oct. 21-22

There will be no school Oct. 21 or Oct. 22 for students or staff. It is the statewide Education Minnesota Conferences.

September Students of the Month

On Oct. 5, Northome High School staff announced September's Students of the Month.

Senior High Academic winner is junior Hollea Boquist, daughter of Teri Koithan and Terry Boquist, Northome. Hollea is involved in football cheerleading, basketball, softball, band, choir, Brain Bee, Science Club, National Honor Society and Student Council.

The nominees were, sophomores Caleb Schneider, Tristan Williams, Cyril Weidenborner and junior Rachel Chaffin.

Senior High Exemplary Student of the Month is junior Kristen White. She is daughter of Brian White and Tina Jensen of Northome. Kristen actively participates in volleyball, band, youth group and basketball.

The nominees were senior Tonya Weidenborner, juniors Jacob Demuth, Hollea Boquist, Danielle Lindner and sophomores Kaylee Fisher and Autumn Rankin.

Junior High Academic Student of the Month is Rachel Fahey, daughter of Sarah and Scott Fahey, Northome. She is involved in volleyball, robotics, band and choir and she is an altar server at her church.

Nominees were seventh grader Cal Roosdett, eighth grader Jackie Pierson and freshman Bailey Baumgartner.

Junior High Exemplary Student of the Month is freshman Isaiah Rahier, son of Gordy and Evie Rahier of Grattan. Isaiah is involved in basketball, football, baseball, band, Junior High National Honor Society and Knowledge Bowl.

The nominees were freshman Bailey Baumgartner, Krissy Kallio, eighth grader Cody Rankin, seventh graders Brigette Williams, Rachel Fahey, Sterling Knaeble.

For the honor of Academic Student of the Month, only the staff that teaches the students may nominate and vote. This nomination is strictly based on the GPA of the students.

For the honor of Exemplary Student of the Month, all of the staff is able to vote. This nomination is based on courtesy, cooperation, dependability and work habits. It is similar to responsibility except all of the staff has a say in it.

Two Northome Students compete at the State Fair

Seventh grader Lane Lindner and sophomore Caleb Schneider represented Koochiching County at the Minnesota State Fair this year.

Both won championship ribbons in 4-H at the August Koochiching County Fair.

Lindner brought his champion carved bowl and earned a blue first place ribbon from the state judging team.

Schneider took his champion Sinkhole Scramble t-shirt quilt and received a red, second place ribbon from the state judges.

September Students of the Month

Jarrett Burns

Jarrett has been chosen as the High School Level Student of the month. Jarrett is a freshman at Kelliher School. He participates in football, basketball and baseball. Even though he is involved in so many extracurricular activities, Jarrett still maintains academic excellence. He is pleasant, thoughtful and participates in class. His achievements both in and out of school deserve to be recognized. Congratulations Jarrett!

Sierra Heck

Sierra has been chosen as the Middle Level Student of the Month. Sierra is in the seventh grade at Kelliher School. She is a very helpful and kind person. She is always willing to give new students in her class a helping hand and was very helpful to them when they were unable to get their lockers open at the beginning of the school year. She is very friendly and is always willing to loan someone a pencil or notebook if they do not have one. Great job Sierra!

Evan Waldo

Evan has been chosen as the Elementary Level Student of the Month. Evan is a kindergartner this year and has done a great job following rules the first time and not needing to be told more than once to do something. Way to go Evan!

Community Ed

Creative Memories will be held Oct. 25 from 5-9 p.m. in the Kelliher School Library.

Aerobics are held Monday through Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the gym. Bring a towel.
