Elementary Family Fitness Fun Night
Families of elementary students as well as pre-school families are welcome to attend the Elementary Family Fitness Fun Night Oct. 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room, high school gym and commons area.
The cost is $1 per person and students must be accompanied by an adult. There is also no running around the school.
Participants will need to come in the big gym doors (#3). Concessions will be available.
Everyone is encouraged to come out and support the Elementary Fitness Fund, enjoy a fun evening with your family and friends and meet the new elementary gym teacher -- Mr. Gross!
Creating an "Iron Drake"
Over the past few years, an ongoing debate has occurred among administrators and coaches about the decline of three sport athletes.
There are several factors that have contributed to this decline. The reasons go from students specializing in one sport to "kids are just different today."
This trend is occurring in many schools, even though several prominent coaches at the collegiate level have preached to student-athletes that they believe multi-sport athletes are better able to compete at the collegiate level.
For this reason, Blackduck High School has created the "Iron Drake Award" program.
What does it mean to be an "Iron Drake?"
Blackduck High School is of the belief that athletics and other extracurricular activities are an integral part of the educational system. It is believed that extracurricular activities contribute to the educational process of developing well-rounded individuals and young adults.
All participants are expected to apply the following ethics: be courteous in speech and action at all times, respect our opponents at all times, be loyal to our own team, obey instructions given by schools and those in charge, and play according to the rules of each game. By displaying ethical behavior, dignity and respect, participants are also expected to be positive role models to others.
This program was developed to promote participation in not just three sports, but also in the fine arts. Student athletes will be recognized for their participation by receiving awards and "Iron Drake" t-shirts. More details can be found on the school's web page.
Monday: JV football at 5 p.m. at home against Lake of the Woods.
Tuesday: Seventh and eighth football at 5 p.m. at Fosston and seventh and eighth, JV and varsity volleyball at 6 p.m. in Northome.
Thursday: Seventh and eighth, B, JV and varsity volleyball at 5 p.m. at home against Walker.
Friday: Varsity football at 7 p. m. in Walker.
Saturday: Varsity volleyball tournament at 9 a.m. in Bagley.
Community Ed classes
Karate will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Sept. 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. The fee is $65.
Women's Emotional Well Being is set for Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.

Northome students do well at State Fair 4-H

Eighth graders Casey Gross, Lane Lindner, Rachel Fahey and junior Caleb Schneider represented Koochiching County at the Minnesota State Fair this year.
All won championship ribbons in 4-H at the August Koochiching County Fair.
Fahey entered a butterfly metamorphosis display in the Self-Determined category grades 6-8 and earned a blue ribbon at state competition.
Gross earned a red ribbon placing in Photography-Grades 6-8 for her photo titled "Tall Grass Against Blue."
Lindner entered a Northern spearing decoy he made himself. He earned a blue ribbon in the category of Fishing Sports-Grades 6-8.
Schneider took his tiled-top coffee table to state competition in the Self-Determined-Grades nine and above category. He earned a blue ribbon placing.
The Self-Determined category is an individual-developed project that is not represented in the 4H booklet. The individual then sets up goals to complete the project and has to explain how and why his/her project fits into this category and what they learned by doing the project.
The kids travelled to the State Fair with other 4Hers from Koochiching, Beltrami, and Itasca counties, leaving early in the morning of Aug 28, and arriving at the fairgrounds in the early afternoon. They stayed at the fair until the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 30.
The kids spent two nights in the "4H Hilton." In reality, it is the third floor dormitory where 4Hers and chaperones are stacked in beds three high for sleeping.
Besides being judged, the kids could venture about the fair with their chaperones and small groups to see other exhibits, educational displays, and rides. On top of that, they were able to partake in the traditional custom of eating unusual foods often on a stick.
"Pizza-on-a-stick was my favorite this year," quipped Schneider about the foods he ate.
The kids were judged on their projects in groups set up by project area and age. In the group judging, there was an adult judge and several other 4Hers from all around the state. Each one tells about his or her project in turn and then answers questions from the judge and the group.
