School board to advertise for Interim Superintendent

The school board held its normal monthly meeting April 16 with a packed room. Approximately 75 community members, parents, teachers and business owners crowded into the media center.

The meeting was called to order by chair Cynthia Nord. Before items on the agenda were addressed, the public was given opportunity for open discussion.

Several people got up to make comments and share their frustrations. Most of the comments were regarding past conduct of the crowd and board members at previous meetings.

It was brought to everyone's attention that the open meeting law was not violated by the on-site visitation since it was not a majority of the board members that attended. It was also mentioned that the lone candidate for the superintendent position, Carl McCrory, took another position with another school.

Blackduck Superintendent Bob Doetsch made a recommendation to advertise for an interim superintendent which could be hired for six months-one year. This will afford the board time to start a new search for a permanent superintendent. Before it the motion was passed, an amendment was added to also include that any candidate would have the correct licensing for the position.

The crowd was left with the question of how the board ended up with McCrory as the only candidate being considered at the end of the search as several boardmembers had expressed some concerns about his license situation and red flags in other areas.

Some of the people who gathered for the meeting made it known that they were in agreement that the board had wasted time and money with no one being hired and no one left as a candidate to pursue.

At that time, the board moved into the general meeting.

Nord mentioned to the board:

• Students in grades 4-6 were working very hard to prepare for the MCA testing.

• Jim Dahedl's DCD and Mr. Coborn's EBD students and paraprofessionals spent a day at Sure Game Resort March 24.

• Cindi Weibe's first grade class received three Kindle Fires this month through a site called DonorsChoose.org.

It was noted that Cody Gross's elementary Physical Education class students are learning how to roller skate.

The board was informed that the Drakes Speech team won the Section 7A championship for the fifth year in a row.

Blackduck's Bulldog track season has started with a bang. A track meet was held at the indoor BSU Rec center and it was noted that the first home meet will be April 24 in Northome.

Approval of last meeting minutes were postponed due to the fact that they were just handed out and no one had had a opportunity to read them.

Under Items for Individual Action, the board voted to approve the following:

• A new board policy that limits the amount of consecutive years a chairperson can hold that position to two. This needs to be on the agenda for discussion for two meeting before it is made a policy. It was passed to consider this meeting number one.

• Advertise for a upper elementary teacher for the coming school year.

• Hire Tiffany Long as a SPED Para for 4.75 hours/day at $10.40/hr, for the remainder of 2011/2012 school year.

• Hire Mickey Witt for two hours/day at $10.40/hr. for the remainder of 2011/2012 school year.

• Hire Jim Dexter, Sr. as junior high baseball coach, Level IV year one at $1,332.

• Advertise for full time DCD teacher.

• Advertise for a 2.5 hours per day Spanish teacher.

• Accept Marie Kovar's resignation form the ECFE program.

• Advertise for a ECFE Educator.

• Accept the Community Ed. Coordinator's contract for the 2012/2013 school year. The board asked for Mr. Doestch to also possibly add some para hours. This then was postponed until the next board meeting.

• Advertise for a full time bus driver.

• Accept Andra Vaughn's teaching contract for the 2012/2013 school year as a Teacher on Special Assignment .43 FTE Activities Director and .57 FTE high school teacher.

• Supt. Doestch suggested to advertise for two weeks for an Interim superintendent to be hired for six months-one year.

• Revise a Gail Johnson's request for an extended leave of absence.

• Accept Rick Olhava's resignation at the end of the school year.

• Advertise for a full time high school Math teacher.

• Accept the Activities Director job description.

It was noted that meal reimbursements will remain the same as it was.

There was some discussion about dropping the track program.

Barb Moon, who is in her fourth season as coach, said she has currently 15 students involved and urged the board to keep the track program. Any decision was postponed until the May meeting.

There was a reminder to all board members concerning the confidentiality rules.

The meeting was then closed for negotiations before it was reopened and adjourned.

The next board meeting will be May 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school media center.
