Sautbine was one of two BSU athletes to survive the first day of preliminary competition at the championships, held at Community Bowl in Bismarck, N.D., qualifying fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Her time of 12.50 seconds trimmed .14 seconds from Bitsy Sorenson's school mark set during the spring of 1979.

The NSIC finals begin today at 11 a.m. with the remaining field events. Track events are set to begin at 1 p.m.

In addition to Sautbine, BSU's Kirsten Maras narrowly missed her season-best time in the 800-meter run but qualified eighth in the event with a time of 2 minutes, 17.12 seconds.

Ashley Larva came just .04 seconds from the school record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.87, but missed qualifying for the 100-meter finals by .13, placing 11th.

With seven of 21 events complete, the Beavers sit in 11th place as a team with four points.

The Beavers' four points came from Sautbine's fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, held April 29-30 in Aberdeen, S.D.

University of Mary leads the women's portion of the championship with 51.50 points. The hosting Marauders hold a 7.5-point edge over defending team champion Augustana College (44).
