Ruth Inez (Berns) Fricke, 97, of Bemidji, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Rev. Kent Dudley officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in Evergreen Cemetery, Northern Township, Beltrami County, Minnesota.
She was born Sept. 27, 1911, to Henry and Mabel (Dickson) Berns at Glidden, Iowa. She married Otmar Fricke June 9, 1931, at Lidderdale, Iowa. They moved to Ottertail, Minn., in 1946, and to their farm north of Bemidji in 1953. She enjoyed working in her huge garden and beautiful flower beds. They were foster parents helping to raise an additional 53 foster children. She managed a home for disabled adults for one year in Bemidji. They sold the farm and retired to an apartment in Bemidji in 1992. She had a stroke in 1997 and was a resident in Havenwood Care Center until her death.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Charles) Conway of Bemidji; sons, Russell (Arla) Fricke of Bemidji and Romayne (Jolyn) Fricke of St. Paul; two daughters-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a special niece, Margie (Ron) Fitzgerald of Bemidji; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Eldon and Wendell; one granddaughter and one grandson.
