Russell Thompson Sr., 63, of Moorhead, Minn., formerly of Bagley, died on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Rice Lake Community Center in Rice Lake, Minn., with the Rev. Lisa Smith officiating. A wake began Wednesday at the Community Center and will continue until the time of service. Military rites will be accorded by members of the White Earth Honor Guard and the Ogema Rifle Squad. Burial will be in St. Phillip's Episcopal Cemetery in Rice Lake.
The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born May 12, 1945, to Robert and Anna (Daydodge) Thompson in White Earth, Minn. He grew up in Bagley. He moved to Chicago, Ill., and entered the U.S. Navy in 1962. After his tenure of service he worked as a carpenter and also worked for Lubinsky Moving. In 1979, he moved to Minneapolis, Minn. He moved back to Bagley in 1980. He has made Moorhead his home, since 1992. On Aug. 25, 2005, he married his longtime companion, Barbara Niedzwiecka, in Fargo, N.D. He liked to hunt, fish, play bingo and build things.
He is survived by his wife of Moorhead; daughters, Ruthie Thompson of Moorhead, Marcie (Jason) Prince of Dilworth, Minn., and Anna (Cory Stevens) Thompson of Glyndon, Minn.; son, Robert Thompson of Moorhead; brothers, Forrest Thompson of Bemidji, Cyril Thompson of Naytahwaush and Conrad Thompson of Bemidji; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Russell Jr., and three brothers.
