Russell Owen Gross

Russell Owen Gross, 81, of Blackduck died under hospice care on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at his home in Blackduck, MN.

A Mass of Christain Burial was held at 10:30 AM on December 17, 2012 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Blackduck with Rev. Raul Perez-Cobo celebrating.Burial was at the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck with full military honors provided by American Legion Post #372 of Blackduck.

Active Pallbearers were Justin Fitch, Joshua Gross, Anthony Gross, Brady Gross, Brett Gross, and Nancy Ericksen. Honorary Pallbearers were Tiffany Haugan, Kelly Hanks, Norman Gross, Larry Gross, Roy Gross, William Gross, and Leo Gross.

Russell was born on May 25, 1931 in Osceola, Wisconsin, the son of Herman and Gladys (Owens) Gross. He attended the Cedar Park Country School and Blackduck High School. He played baseball during his younger years for the township baseball league. He was inducted into the US Army on December 29, 1954 and served during the Korean Conflict. He served with the 46th Engineers Battalion, Company B and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sp3 on December 12, 1956. He married Bernice Bjella and together they had 6 children. He logged and farmed when he was younger and over the years he had cleared and bulldozed land for farming in Langor and Hines Townships. Russell married Louise Sever on October 6, 1979 in Aurora, MN. He was educated from life experiences in the school of hard knocks. He owned and operated a farm in Hines Township for many years. He served on the Hines Town Board in the 70’s. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #372 in Blackduck. He enjoyed traveling, watching the Twins and Vikings, visiting and playing baseball with his grandchildren, and spending time with his family. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many.

He is survived his wife, Louise Gross of Blackduck; 4 sons, Vincent Gross, Vance (Dora) Gross, Joseph (Shanna), and Jesse Gross, all of Hines; 7 grandchildren, Tiffany Haugan, Josh Gross, Kelly Hanks, Anthony Gross, Justin Fitch, Brady Gross, and Brett Gross; 2 great granddaughters, Miley Jo Hanks and Mia Rose Haugan; 10 siblings, Margaret Scott of Hoyt lakes, MN, Betty Schwegel of Whitefish, MT, Norman (Billie Jean) Gross, Larry (Peggy) Gross, Roy (Connie) Gross, Judy Reisch, Jane (Tom) Frenzel, William Gross, and Leo Gross, all of Blackduck; his brother in law, Harold Peterson of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Gross in April, 1978; 2 infant sons, Dean and Dale; his parents, Herman and Gladys Gross, his sister, Mary Peterson; 2 infant sisters, Peggy and Donna Faye Gross; and 3 brothers in law, Dean Reisch, John Scott, and Art Schwegel.
