PARK RAPIDS, Minn. -- Hubbard County authorities responded to several burglary calls at rural churches Sunday morning.

Pastors at churches in Akeley, Nevis and Guthrie all experienced weekend break-ins. In some cases, burglars broke glass to gain entry to the buildings. Besides the damage, valuables were reported missing.

Gil Morris, president of First Lutheran Church of Akeley, said burglars caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to his church, breaking down locked doors to get at cash and leaving other valuables behind.

“Three or four doors will have to be replaced,” he said. “We had three or four canisters of money in several places, like coffee fund money, for one purpose or another. We figured in the neighborhood of $200 was taken.”

Morris said he doubts strangers were the culprits. “It seemed somebody knew where to look, or other than that they just looked for doors that were locked and (determined) there was something in there that they could use,” he said.

Church officials were still tallying the damage.
