Runing eliminates Andrews in tiebreaker, joins Wald as national qualifier

The Tyler Runing rink defeated the Trevor Andrews rink in a tiebreaker Sunday night to earn second place in the Minnesota State Junior Curling Championships at the Bemidji Curling Club.

Runing and Andrews both finished 6-2 in pool play, one victory behind champion Aaron Wald. The Wald and Runing rinks both advance to nationals.

Wald, whose rink also includes Josh Bahr, Jerod Zezel and John Muller, won the championship earlier Sunday with an 8-5 extra-end victory over Andrews. Wald scored three in the 11th end after Andrews had tie the match with a single in the 10th.

In Sunday morning matches, Wald defeated Noah Johnson-Fiskness 11-1 and Andrews topped William Howieson 7-1. Runing earned a spot in the tiebreaker with a 9-6 win over Tony Wright.

In the Women's division, Miranda Solem won the championship and Cory Christensen took second place. Both qualified for nationals.

Wald 7-1, Runing 6-2, Andrews 6-2, Howieson 4-4, Blagoue 3-4, Wright 3-4, Johannsen 3-5, Ausen 2-6, Fiskness 1-7.

Runing 9, Wright 6. Andrews 7, Howieson 1. Wald 11, Fiskness 1. Blagoue 9, Ausen 6.

Sunday afternoon matches

Runing 8, Johannsen 7. Wald 8, Andrews 5. Howieson 9, Ausen 6.

Women's Division

Final standings

Solem 6-1, Christensen 5-2, Humeniuk 2-4, Osbakken 0-6.
