Ruby J. Schmidt, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Ruby was born the daughter of Lawrence and Jeannette (McCrillis) Burgeson on March 6, 1926 in Mineral Center, Minn. She was raised and educated in Remer and Anoka, Minn. Ruby graduated high school from Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, Minn. As a young woman, she worked at a furniture plant in Anoka.

Ruby married Lyle Schmidt on June 4, 1947 in Anoka. They made their home in Mound, Minn., until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1962. Ruby stayed at home to raise their children, and also operated a small daycare at their home. Ruby became a resident of St. Mary's Nursing Center, now known as Oak Crossing, in December 2000.

Ruby was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed sewing and playing the piano.

Surviving Ruby are her husband, Lyle; two sons, Jerry (Kathy) Schmidt of Park Rapids and Barry Schmidt of Detroit Lakes; one daughter, Anne (Tom) Campbell of Detroit Lakes; four grandchildren; one great grandson; three brothers, Lawrence (Karen) Burgeson of Detroit Lakes, Donald (Lou) Burgeson of Mesa, Ariz., and Ted (Darlene) Burgeson of Alexandria, Minn.; one stepsister, Mary (Tim) Kessler of Detroit Lakes; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Burgeson of Mound, Minn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Ruby in death were her parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Clifford Burgeson.

Memorial services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Erik Galenieks officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services.
