Roy Waggoner, 84, of Bagley, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at Neilson Place in Bemidji.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley with John Omans officiating. A visitation was held Friday at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley, Minn. Burial will be in the Bagley City Cemetery in Bagley, Minnesota. Military rites will be accorded by the Irvin Blix American Legion Post 16 of Bagley.

He was born March 23, 1924, to Robert Shannon and Effie (Terry) Waggoner in Des Lacs, N.D. When he was young, his family moved to a farm in Minnesota. He attended school in Bagley. In 1942, he moved to Detroit, Mich., to work for Dodge Motor Company until he was called to serve his country. At the age of 19, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Ft. Snelling and assigned to the 414th Co. of Engineering at Ft. Jackson, S.C. In 1944, he was sent to the South West Pacific Theater of Operations. He served in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands and after the surrender of the Japanese was assigned to disarm and occupy the Japanese Army. He was the recipient of the Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. On Sept. 1, 1946, he married Evelyn Anderson of Bagley, and they moved to Elkhart, Ind. He started his own company, Shylo Industries, manufacturing campers, pick-up toppers and van conversions. In 1982, he sold the company and he and his wife moved to Lake Lomond in Bagley. He enjoyed fishing, and observing wildlife and traveling in his motor home.

He is survived by his wife of Bagley; daughter, Karen (Micheal) Vescelus of Sellersburg, Ind.; son, Douglas (Wynn) of Boulder, Colo.; five grandsons, two step-granddaughters and four great-grandchildren; special friend, Samantha Brovold; sisters, Cecile Rotzien and Mae Miller and a sister-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Russell, Robert, Edgar and twin brother, Ray; and sister, Carrie Pingrey.
