It happened before dawn Thursday at one of the housing projects on the White Earth Indian Reservation.

Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said a 15-year-old girl suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital in Fargo, N.D., for emergency surgery.

A 16-year-old girl was treated and released from a Detroit Lakes hospital.

Acting White Earth Police Chief Mike Laroque said the dog was loose and that the owner showed up shortly after the attack, which happened outside a house in the project.

The attack lasted up to five minutes, until a White Earth tribal officer arrived and killed the dog when it turned on the officer. Authorities did not reveal how the girls came in contact with the dog.
