Former Detroit Lakes resident Robert N. Swanson, 89, of Austin, Minn., died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield, Minn.
Robert Neil Swanson was born to John and Sannie (Trowbridge) Swanson on June 22, 1919 in Otter Tail County. He married Sara Saumweber on Dec. 31, 1944 in Fargo. Robert attended St. Paul Bible Institute and became an ordained pastor. He also worked in the U.S. Postal Service.
Robert and Sara made their home in Detroit Lakes, where Robert was pastor of First Baptist Church from 1952 through 1965. They relocated to St. Peter, Minn.; Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Thermopolis, Wyo., before moving to Austin in 2001. They were members of Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin.
Surviving Robert are his wife, Sara; three daughters, Kathleen (Vernon) Lewis of Austin, Rebecca Swanson of Glendora, Calif., and Mary Kay (William) Ernst of Oak Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Mayme Peterson of Minneapolis. Robert's parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Mike Sager officiating. Friends may greet the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Lake Eunice Free Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes.
