Robert “Bob” Chester Blanshan

Robert “Bob” Chester Blanshan went home to be with His Lord on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, joining his son Davie who has been patiently waiting his dad’s arrival in heaven. Bob was born February 4, 1926 in Mankato, Minnesota, to Ralph and Edith “Fern” Pearson Blanshan. He attended school in Mankato. He served in the U. S. Navy and the Merchant Marine in the northern Pacific during World War II. Bob attended Nebraska Christian College and graduated from Midwestern School of Evangelism in Ottumwa, Iowa. He met his wife June (Colebank) Blanshan while roller-skating in Mankato. They were married on August 20, 1947 at the Church of Christ in Madelia, Minnesota and were married for almost 66 years. Bob was ordained into the ministry in December of 1949 at the Church of Christ in Madelia by J. Rowland Wilder. He served in Churches of Christ in Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Florida and Colorado. He and his wife June served four years as missionaries in Jamaica, West Indies. Bob preferred to preach in small churches. To supplement his income he worked as a school bus driver, feed store manager, farm laborer, painter and policeman in Lake Crystal and West Concord, Minnesota. He also served as a Juvenile probation officer in Lincoln, Nebraska where he took part in the manhunt for mass murderer Charles Starkweather in 1959. He enjoyed preaching, hunting, fishing, visiting with friends and relatives, writing poems for special occasions, camping, reading westerns, and throwing horseshoes. Bob was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. One of his favorite past-times was listening to his extended family play instruments and sing. He especially loved spaghetti, chocolate, and Dave’s Pizza in Bemidji. Bob had a special place in his heart for the handicapped and started the North Central Sheltered Workshop in Bemidji, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife June of Madelia, daughter Barbara (Paul) Lamm of Madelia, son Dale (Linda) Rochester, MN, daughters Becky (Wayne Hinrichs), Shevlin, MN, Nancy (Dennis) Erickson, Mason City, Iowa, Suzanne (Jon) Larson, West Fargo, ND, Amy (Rod) Davis, Madelia, MN, Brenda (Richard) Prochazka, Kirkliston, Scotland, brothers Jim (Florence) Blanshan, Owatonna, MN, Harvey Blanshan, Mankato, MN, Garry Blanshan, Mankato, MN, Albert (Bonnie) Blanshan, Belle Plaine, MN, sister Sandra Mulvehill, St. Peter. MN, 23 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son David Warren, sister Donna Jean Yokiel and infant brother Duane.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Madelia, Minnesota. Visitation will be held one hour before the service. Inurnment will be at Minneopa Cemetery near Mankato.
