Richard Valentine Nicholas Roussopolous

Richard Valentine Nicholas Roussopolous, 82, of Nevis, formerly of St. Paul, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 at his home in Crow Wing Lake Township.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1927 in St. Paul to Nicholas and Clara (Boelke) Roussopoulos. He attended the Douglas Elementary School through the eighth grade in St. Paul. He went on to attend Humboldt High School.

In 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served his country in the Pacific Theatre of WWII as a Seaman lst Class. His military service continued into the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to St. Paul where he began a 42-year career as a firefighter with the St. Paul Fire Department. On May 11, 1953 he married Lillian Loraine Schlirf in St. Paul. They had four children. He retired in 1989 after suffering a heart attack while on the job.

He was a member of the Military Vehicle Collectors Club and the National Rifle Association.

In 1995, they sold their St. Paul home and moved to a country home in Crow Wing Lake Township where he lived until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters: Carol, of Nevis, Nancy, of St. Paul, and Lois (Christopher) Hebert, of Manteca, Calif.; his son, Robert (Mary), of Grasston; five grandsons; one great-grandson; a brother, Eugene (Zoe Ann), of Lake City; a sister-in-law, Margie, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Alan Crawford and Harold.

Casket bearers: His son, Robert and his grandsons: Michael and Steven Glinnon and Nicholas Roussopoulos.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), Feb. 18 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, with Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen officiating.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The Star Of The North Marine Corps League will provide military honors. Ray Vaadeland will play Taps.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids.
