Reef Club to hold event on Saturday
The Northern Minnesota Reef Club hosts a Frag Swap from 12-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Headwaters Science Center, located at 413 Beltrami Ave. N.W.
The free public event will unveil the new saltwater exhibit at the HSC. The exhibit is a cooperative venture between the HSC and the Reef Club. Anyone interested in learning more about aquariums is encouraged to attend.
At 1 p.m., special guest speaker Matt Pedersen, an interactive software developer and part-time fly fishing guide from Duluth, will present his program, "Captive Breeding 101."
Pedersen has experience as an aquarist for 28 years, having worked in the areas of retail, maintenance, wholesale and hatchery. Most notably, Pedersen has spawned 17 species of marine fish, successfully raising five of them (including one Harlequin Filefish), and has attempted another six invertebrate species to date. This was all accomplished with less than 100 gallons of total working capacity in a closed culture.
Pedersen is the co-founder of the Marine Ornamental Fish & Invertebrate Breeders Association. He was named Aquarist of the Year by IMAC West in August 2009, and was named MASNA's Aquarist of the Year in September 2009, in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the marine aquarium hobby.
