Appearing before United States District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis in Duluth, Roy Randolf White Sr. was sentenced to 57 months in prison for one count of aggravated assault.

White was indicted on Dec. 9 and pleaded guilty Jan. 28.

White assaulted the victim with a dangerous weapon by repeatedly kicking him. According to an FBI affidavit, Red Lake Tribal Police were called to a residence on the Red Lake Indian Reservation on Sept. 2. When they arrived, they found the 35-year-old victim lying on a cement porch in a pool of blood. Witnesses reported that White had kicked the victim numerous times in addition to repeatedly punching him.

As a result of the assault, the victim suffered a broken jaw and multiple facial fractures. He underwent surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center. Two plates were inserted in his head to repair his face, and he had to be intubated for assistance in breathing.

After the assault, White fled but was located and apprehended by authorities while he attempted to hide in the back of his vehicle. Witnesses told police White was upset with the victim because the victim supposedly had dated one of White's former girlfriends.

The case is the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI.

The federal government has primary law enforcement jurisdiction over the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
