BECKER - Rob Pemberton's perfect season is in danger of coming to an end.
The Red Lake senior fired 79 at Pebble Creek on Wednesday and stands tied for 17th after Day 1 of the Class A Boys State Golf Tournament.
The 36-hole tournament wraps up tomorrow.
Pemberton, who has been the medalist in every meet he has entered this season, trails first round leader Conner Christoff by nine strokes. The Providence Academy senior shot 70, which included a tournament-best 33 on the back nine.
In second is Will Lage of Mounds Park Academy at 73 and in third is Dillon Schultz of Springfield/Comfrey at 74.
Leading the team competition after Day 1 is Rushford-Peterson with a four-man score of 319. Providence Academy is second at 327 and Hawley is third at 328.
Other regional names of note in the Class A boys Tournament:
Alex Mireault of Fosston is tied for 17th at 80.
Steven Sunnell of Blackduck is 31st at 84.
The Class A girls tournament is also being played at Pebble Creek.
Leading the individual tournament is Anna Maria Tarazona of Madelia with a 77. Sarah Utz of Providence Academy trails at 88.
Locally, Amy Mireault of Fosston is tied for seventh at 89.
Cass Lake-Bena's Anne Aitken is tied for 11th with a 91 in her second straight appearance at state.
Leading the girls tournament is Mounds Park Academy at 356. Mahnomen is second at 397.
The Class A Tournament wraps up today.
The Class AA tournament also opened on Wednesday at The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
Leading the individual tournament is Glenn Walls of International Falls with a first-round score of 71.
Orono leads the team event with a 308. Hermantown is second at 312 and Rochester Lourdes is third at 314 in a tight race.
In the girls tournament, Cydney Hasselberg of Staples-Motley leads the individual tournament at 73.
Trailing close behind her are four from Minnewaska, which have scores ranging from 74-79.
Minnewaska leads the team event with a 304. Red Wing is second at 345.
The Class AA tournament wraps up today.
The Class 3A tournament started Tuesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
Joe Petrulo of Eastview/Apple Valley leads after the first round with a 71. Six others are within four strokes of the lead.
Eden Prairie leads the team event with a 305. Wayzata is third at 307. Eastview/Apple Valley and Forest Lake trail at 310.
The Class 3A boys tournament wrapped up Wednesday but results were not available.
The girls tournament also concluded Wednesday with Lakeville North taking the team title at 692 in a close race. Woodbury was second at 693, Edina was third at 696 and Eden Prairie was fourth at 699.
Betsy Kelly of Forest Lake won the individual title by shooting a two-round total of 77-74-151. She won by four strokes.
