Red Lake woman in critical condition following Friday accident

A 24-year-old Red Lake woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle Friday night while standing along state Highway 89.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol out of Thief River Falls:

Sonja D. Lussier was standing on the highway when she was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina driven by James R. Brown, 24, of Red Lake.

The accident was reported at 11:21 p.m. on Highway 89 about 21 miles north of U.S. Highway 2 in Beltrami County.

Lussier and Brown had been in the vehicle together, but Lussier got out of the vehicle and stood on the side of the road.

Brown turned the vehicle around on Highway 89 to head north when he struck Lussier with the vehicle.

He then continued north until he was located by units with the Red Lake Police Department.

Lussier was life-flighted to north Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn., with critical injuries. Brown was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Red Lake Police Department, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the State Patrol.

The vehicle sustained moderate damage.
