The indictment, filed last week in U.S. District Court, charges Orville Dean White Jr., a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, with two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. White was arrested Thursday and made his initial appearance in federal court in Bemidji.

The indictment alleges that on May 1, White assaulted a female resident of the Red Lake Indian Reservation, breaking her nose. Then, on Feb. 22, 2009, he allegedly broke the woman's wrist.

If convicted, White faces a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each charge. All sentences will be determined by a federal district court judge.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI, with assistance from the Family Advocacy Center in Bemidji. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Clifford B. Wardlaw.

Because the Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation, some of the crimes that occur there are investigated by the FBI in conjunction with the Red Lake Tribal Police Department. Those cases are prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office.
