A Red Lake Falls, Minn., man is dead after forcing his way into an ex-girlfriend’s home and apparently shooting himself, according to police.
Deputies from the Red Lake County Sheriff’s Office found Kevin Salveson, 53, deceased in the home of Heather Altendorf, 38, at about 4 p.m. Saturday in Red Lake Falls.
Altendorf was transported to Sanford Thief River Falls Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries she sustained when Salveson struck her in the face with the butt of a .308 caliber rifle. She was released the following day.
Salveson went to Altendorf’s home with the intention of killing her and then killing himself, according to police. After being struck with the gun, Altendorf was able to escape to a neighbor’s home, where she called 911.
Altendorf and Salveson had dated in the past, including living together in Red Lake Falls for a period of time, but had not been actively involved for about a year. Police said a restraining order against Salveson had been filed by Altendorf and approved early last week.
Prior to the shooting, Salveson had been staying with friends in Red Lake Falls — approximately three blocks away from Altendorf’s home. Further investigation showed Salveson had fired the gun inside his residence before heading out to confront Altendorf.
Salveson’s body was taken to the University of North Dakota Forensic Pathology Department for an autopsy. A final autopsy report will not be available for some time, according to police.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Red Lake County Medical Examiner’s Office.
