He was moved to the Hubbard County area of Northern Minnesota as a young child, where he grew up farming and raising cattle and hogs with his father. He married Margaret Mae "Peggy" Grimsley Nov. 16, 1963, at the Cass Lake Lutheran Church. They had no children. They lived in Nymore during their entire married life until she died in 1991.
