The Beavers improved to 9-10 overall and 5-10 in the NSIC while the Mustangs fell to 3-17 and 2-13.

BSU forged a 32-22 lead at intermission and Rash led the way with 10 points.

The Beavers didn’t waste any time taking charge as Morgan Lee scored nine seconds into the contest and Jessie Althoff upped the cushion to 4-0 with a successful drive.

A pair of Rash buckets increased the lead to 8-2 and another Rash drive three minutes into the game gave the home team a 10-2 advantage.

The margin reached double figures when Lee drained a 3-pointer which provided a 15-5 lead with 15:30 to play.

SMSU battled back, however, and closed its gap to 18-14 midway through the first half but the Beavers responded with a 9-0 spurt to regain control.

The run featured four points from Rash, three courtesy of Emily Kaus and a bucket by Lee.

The second half also started well for BSU as Jessie Althoff and Lee drained jumpers to push the lead to 36-22.

With 9:21 to go, however, the Mustangs had whittled their deficit to 47-44 and a minute later they were within 47-45.

The visitors eventually closed the gap to 51-50 with five minutes to play but baskets by Lee and Rash provided a five-point cushion which SMSU could not overcome.

Kaus grabbed nine rebounds, including seven from the defensive end of the court, to pace the Beavers. Lee dished four of Bemidji’s eight assists and Rash had three.

Rash also contributed five steals while Shannon Thompson had three.

Bemidji State returns to action 4 p.m. today when it entertains Sioux Falls.
