Randolph "Rand" Charles Parkhurst, 62, of Red Lake, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care Facility in Red Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Mary's Mission Catholic Church in Red Lake, with the Rev. Patrick Sullivan officiating. A wake will begin at 3 p.m. today at the Little Rock Center in Red Lake and will continue until the time of the services, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

The pallbearers will be Donald Kelly, Bruce Jourdain, Donald Brun, Ron Fairbanks, Herb Tarnow, Doak Cobenais with alternates, Darrell Kingbird and Paul Beaulieu.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Headbird, Mike Beaulieu, Murphy Parkhurst, Joseph Parkhurst, George Parkhurst, Mott Parkhurst, Dan Johnson, Gary Auginaush and Daniel Saunders.

He was born Nov. 17, 1946 to Murphy and Mary (Beaulieu) Parkhurst in Bemidji. He was raised and educated in Red Lake and graduated from Red Lake High School. He attended Bemidji State University, while there he trained with the Minnesota Vikings, who had a training camp at BSU. He was drafted in 1966, where he did heavy equipment repair. He was stationed in Germany from 1967-1968 and then in Korea. Following his honorable discharge in 1969, he returned to Red Lake where he worked with his family logging business for several years. He met Marlene Rosebear-Erickson and they were together for 29 years, before marrying on July 1, 1989, in Red Lake. He operated machinery with Red Lake Builders and was a member of Local 49. He also was self employed as a contractor for clear cutting and brushing. He worked for many years for Red Lake Forestry before he retired.

He liked to play keno and attended and danced in many pow-wows. He was an excellent marksman and was excellent in hunting, trapping and fishing. He played softball for a number of years and loved to watch ball games on the television.

He is survived by his brothers, Murphy (Maggie) Parkhurst of Minneapolis and Mott (Jan) Parkhurst of Fridley, Minn.; a sister, Emily (Grandpa John) Parkhurst of Red Lake; children, Crystal (Lee) Parkhurst of Red Lake Falls, Minn., Christopher (Sheila) Erickson of Red Lake, Charles Parkhurst of Pekin, Ill. and Vincent (Tia) Parkhurst of Red Lake; step-children, Colleen (Greg) Erickson of Red Lake, Lyndon (Gabriel) Erickson of Alabama and Kelly Erickson of Thief River Falls, Minn.; a grandson, whom he raised, Daniel Saunders; 21 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene; sister, Georgianna; a granddaughter and a step-son, Randy Erickson.
