Prime Time | Thank you for letting us serve you at the Senior Center for 50 years
It all started with a dream and the desire to make life better for older adults. A group got together, armed with a can of glass wax, a ladder, brooms, a bucket and a vacuum cleaner to prepare a little ice skating warming house to become Bemidji's first Senior Citizens Center for older adults to come for socialization and to support each other.
There were many who believed in and helped, and some even went to the Legislature in St. Paul to make the dream a reality. They suggested the site where the warming house was located and where the Northland Apartments are now, on America Avenue Northwest. Fifty years ago, July 12, 1962, the Senior Center was started in the ice skating warming house with that dream.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed part of themselves to make the dream a reality over the last 50 years.
We have deeply appreciated the support of the community through the good times and the bad. We have enjoyed getting to know the many wonderful people who have made Bemidji great. We are glad that we have been able to help people along the way. But, most of all, we have felt honored and have enjoyed serving the community of Bemidji and the surrounding area for the last 50 years. It has truly been our pleasure to serve you for the last 50 years and we look forward to serving you in the future.
We are celebrating our 50th anniversary in the month of July and we invite you to join us in our happy occasion.
We will be having a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house from 1-3 p.m. Thursday with cake and coffee being served. Also, we will have a dance from 1:30-4 p.m. July 22.
If you have the itch to travel, we also offer two one-day bus trips, one to the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 27 for $46 for members and $56 for nonmembers and another one-day bus trip to see the Minnesota Twins play baseball Sept. 26. The cost for the Twins trip is $82 for members and $92 for nonmembers. All ages are welcome.
Let us take care of the details, traffic and parking. Sit back, relax and enjoy the trip. You can register at the front desk of the Senior Center to reserve your seat.
