Prime Time: Finding the best solution
The problem began with no safe place to drop off or pick up patrons of the Senior Center who have mobility issues, resulting in dangerous double parking and crossing traffic.
The Special Task Force, put into place by the Downtown Development Authority to solve the problem, decided that this needed immediate attention because of the safety issue. After many different ideas were offered up, the final solution was to move the handicap parking spot around the corner from Third Street to Minnesota Avenue and then mark the parking spot on Third Street as 15-minute parking, all day, every day, for anyone. Also during this process, the idea arose that more 15-minute parking spots may be needed around downtown to relieve some of the parking congestion.
A new sign has been placed on the Third Street parking spot stating that it is 15-minute parking. The blue curb and blue handicap marking on the pavement is gone, replaced by grey paint to match the sidewalk and pavement.
This new parking spot can be used by anyone to access the businesses along Minnesota and Third Street, not just for the Senior Center. This will add to the convenience of shopping downtown.
Thank you to the City Council, the Downtown Development Authority and the Special Task Force for putting in place a 15-minute parking spot on the 200 block of Third Street for all of the businesses and their patrons to use.
