PREP ROUNDUP: Nissen, Staples lead BCLB grapplers at Foley meet
BLACKDUCK — Andrew Nissen and Daven Staples helped the Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena wrestling team place sixth at last weekend’s Foley Invitational, a meet that included Foley (ranked No. 1 in Class 2A), Atwater-Cosmos (No. 2 in Class A) and Alexandria (No. 13 in Class 3A).
The Bears won 22 of their 35 individual matches and placed in nine of the 11 weights in which they competed.
Nissen (15-1) claimed the 106-pound title and improved his individual record to 15-1. In the championship match he defeated Rylan Molinaro of Atwater-Cosmos 12-8. Staples entered the tournament unbeaten at 170 pounds and maintained that status as he won the championship, pinning Atwater-Cosmos’ Jordan Nelson.
Also placing for BCLB were Tanner Temlin at 195 (third), Ian Frenzel at 120 (fifth), Mason Frenzel at 145 (fifth), Trevor Smith at 152 (fifth), Kyle Michalek at 126 (sixth), David Foster at 113 (seventh) and Tanner George at 132 (eighth).
On Thursday the Bears will travel to Pierz in what some section followers believe could be a preview of the section championship match. On Saturday BCLB will participate in the Rick Lee Invitational in Bemidji.
The recent cold spell limited the action for the area boys and girls basketball teams. In boys action last week Bagley fell 60-40 to Fertile Beltrami, Goodridge-Grygla stopped Clearbrook-Gonvick 71-59, Cass Lake-Bena tripped Blackduck 69-49 and Red Lake bounced Pine River 93-56.Tuesday’s results saw Northome-Kelliher belt Lake of the Woods 111-41, Blackduck defeat Laporte 91-70 and WHA slap Clearbrook-Gonvick 78-49.
Tonight’s schedule sees Northome-Kelliher travelling to Clearbrook-Gonvick and Cass Lake-Bena entertaining Crosby-Ironton.
Among Friday’s games are Bagley visiting Park Christian, RLCC heading to Clearbrook-Gonvick, Northome-Kelliher hosting Laporte, Blackduck welcoming Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Cass Lake-Bena traveling to Red Lake.
WHA and Cass Lake-Bena began are the top two teams in the Northland Conference standings as the Wolves are 4-0-0 in league play and the Panthers 2-0.
In girls action WHA took over the top spot in the Northwoods Conference by downing Clearbrook-Gonvick 59-51 Tuesday. That result upped WHA’s league mark to 4-1 while the Bears dipped to 3-1.
Today sees Northome-Kelliher hosting Littlefork-BF, Remer heading to Laporte and Red Lake visiting RLCC.
Friday’s schedule finds Bagley traveling to Park Christian, Blackduck making the trip south to Walker, Laporte hosting Northome-Kelliher and Red Lake entertaining Cass Lake-Bena.
