PREP ROUNDUP: CL-B, Blackduck among unbeatens in Northland Conference

CASS LAKE — As the 2014 portion of the winter sports seasons begin, Cass Lake-Bena and Blackduck join Walker-Hackensack-Akeley as unbeatens in the boys Northland Conference basketball standings.

The Panthers and Drakes share 2-0 league records while WHA leads the conference at 3-0.

Overall CL-B is 4-1 and Blackduck 6-2.

Nevis begins 2014 in sole possession of fourth at 2-1 while Kelliher-Northome is 2-2, Red Lake 1-2, Laporte 0-3 and Pine River-Backus 0-4.

The standings will change Friday when Blackduck visits Cass Lake-Bena and Red Lake hosts Pine River. On Tuesday Pine River will head to Laporte and Red Lake will travel to Nevis.

Bagley begins the new year in fourth place in the boys Pine to Prairie North Division standings as the Flyers are 1-2 in league play and 1-9 overall.

Today finds Bagley entertaining Fertile-Beltrami and on Saturday it will host Warroad. The homestand concludes Monday when Win-E-Mac pays a visit.

During the holiday break Red Lake and Bagley participated in tournaments but the two area teams struggled, combining for an 0-5 record.

Bagley fell 60-56 to Pequot Lakes and 55-42 to Hermantown at the Pequot Lakes Invitational while Red Lake went 0-3 at the Russ Smith Invitational held in Thief River Falls.

The Warriors dropped an 81-77 decision to Northern Freeze in the first round and then lost 90-64 to Thief River Falls. In its final game Red Lake fell 87-72 to Crookston.

In area girls action Clearbrook-Gonvick leads the Northwoods Conference with a 2-0 record and WHA is in second at 3-1.

Pine River-Backus holds third at 2-1 and Kelliher-Northome owns fourth at 2-2. Sharing 1-2 league records are Nevis and Blackduck while Cass Lake-Bena is 1-2 and Laporte 0-2.

Bagley is in second place in the Pine to Prairie North Division as the Flyers are 3-1 in conference action and 4-1 overall.

Red Lake, which is not affiliated with a conference in girls basketball action, is 5-2. During the holiday break the Warriors split a pair of contests at a tournament in Ogilvie, falling 80-77 to Milaca and blasting North Lakes Academy 72-7.

Today’s schedule finds Blackduck traveling to Clearbrook-Gonvick and Bagley visiting Frazee.

On Friday Clearbrook-Gonvick will host Kelliher-Northome and Cass Lake-Bena will entertain Blackduck.

Saturday’s schedule sees Warroad heading to Bagley.

In wrestling, Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena is having a tremendous season and the Bears will take a 6-0 dual record into the new year. So far BCLB has defeated United North Central 39-28, Park Rapids 54-18, Mahnomen 65-13, WHAN 68-12, Deer River 53-3 and Thief River Falls 51-17. It also won the eight-team Fosston-Bagley Invitational and finished third at the 33-team Big Bear meet.

On Saturday BCLB will test itself against a strong field at the Foley Invitational and on Tuesday it will tangle with Pine River and Aitkin in a triangular at Pine River.

Fosston-Bagley is 3-2 entering the new year and is coming off a 45-33 dual win over East Grand Forks and a 19th-place showing at the Big Bear.

The Greyhounds will compete at the Fertile tournament on Saturday and tackle Mahnomen in a dual meet on Tuesday.
