BEMIDJI – Highway 2 from East Grand Forks to Crookston was closed Monday afternoon due to high winds causing blowing snow and white-out conditions, according to a press release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol made the decision to close the road.

The storm system is moving east toward the Bemidji area.

“Our advice is that activities for tonight in Beltrami County should be cancelled or postponed,” Beryl Wernberg, Beltrami County Emergency Director, wrote in an email.

According to the press release:

Conditions in the region have deteriorated and snowplows in the northern Red River Valley have been removed. They will resume operation when conditions improve.

Motorists are advised not to travel until conditions improve and MnDOT and the Minnesota State Patrol open the road.

Motorists should plan accordingly. When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or sentenced to 90 days in jail. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.
