Police shoot man accused of stabbing toddler

BABBITT, Minn. -- A Babbitt Police officer shot a man who emerged from a home Tuesday evening with a child he had stabbed, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported.

According to a police report, a 911 call came in to the Babbitt Police office at 5:18 p.m. about a disturbance on Ash Boulevard. The officer who responded reported that a male suspect with a knife emerged from a home with the 3-year-old. The officer shot the suspect after calling for backup.

The man, 27, and the child were brought to a hospital in Ely. The man was later airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. The baby was kept at Ely-Bloomenson Hospital in Ely.

Officers remained on the scene after 11 p.m. Tuesday with interviews of officers and witnesses. Babbitt Police turned the investigation over to St. Louis County and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. A Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy and Ely Police also responded.
