Although the Bemidji Public Library will be closed for regular business Monday, the monthly book discussion will be held as usual.
At noon Monday and at 7 p.m. Thursday, the discussion group will gather in the front meeting room to explore the novel "Away" by Amy Bloom.
Extra copies of the book are available at the library or at local bookstores. Book titles for the monthly series will come from the "Book Club in a Bag" made available through the Regional Library System. This event is free and open to the public.
First Friday events
Cabin Coffee House and Café, 214 3rd St., will welcome John Egger and his exhibit, "Rural Images," with an opening reception from 4-6 p.m.
Fleur de Lis Art Gallery in the Wild Rose Theater, 501 Bemidji Ave., will be open from 2-6 p.m. with a new gallery rotation of local and regional artists work, copies of "Desilu: The Story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz" by Coyne Steven Sanders and CD's of "Playing the Bill."
Independent Film Festival showing of work by Harlan Hegna, a Bemidji native now living in Los Angeles and working as a production coordinator, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Wild Rose Theater. This will be the initial showcase for the upcoming Fathom Film Festival. It is free and open to the public.
Gallery North, 502 3rd St., will continue their annual Holiday Boutique of handmade items for the month of January.
Neilson Place, 1000 Anne St. NW, will continue the exhibit of photographer Melissa Moss of Blueleaf Photographs entitled "Serenity," which means different things to different people for everyone finds peace in their own way. A price list is available at the front desk.
Bemidji Community Arts Center, 426 Bemidji Ave. N, call for art for the annual "Members Show" at the February First Friday. Members of BCAC and other artists are invited to submit one to three pieces per artist for approval and installation. The Exhibit Committee will be accepting submissions from BCAC members between Jan. 17-28 during regular gallery hours: noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Bemidji State University Department of Music will award a wide variety of scholarships to talented students (instrumentalists and vocalists) who will be entering college in fall 2012 and interested in participating in the music program at BSU. On-campus auditions are scheduled Feb. 4 during the Honor Band and Feb. 25 in Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Auditions will also be held during the Minnesota Music Educator's Association (MMEA) Midwinter Clinic in Minneapolis from 1-3 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church. Acrylic Painting - the abstract experience for beginners - with Shannon Lucas Westrum of Wildflower Design Studios will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (with a lunch break) Jan. 21 at the Headwaters School for Music and the Arts. Participants will learn different techniques and mediums in a no-pressure creative environment; be supplied with an easel, canvas, palette, paints and brushes for their use, and will have a canvas to take home at the end of the workshop. 2012 Winter Retreat for Writers: Dreams as Portals for Creative Energy with CarolAnn Russell, poet, professor of creative writing and women's studies at BSU will take place from 5-9 p.m. Jan. 27 and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Headwaters School, 519 Minnesota Ave. Russell will guide participants in the purpose and nature of dream imagery to dramatize creative energy and awaken "The Sacred Feminine" within. Streams of consciousness writing will be the medium for self-exploration with discussions focusing on awakening the feminine part of the psyche through dream-work. Introduction to Tapestry Weaving (Painting with Yarn) with fabric artist Kristin Majkrzak in a course in the fundamentals of tapestry weaving. Students will be provided a basic frame loom and yarn for weaving and will learn basic weaving techniques: how to use color, create shapes and finishing methods. Terry Lynn Carlson, Artistic Director for the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, will be holding auditions for the 2012 summer season from 4-10 p.m. Jan. 9 in the Historic Chief Theater, 314 Beltrami Ave. Casting for the 2012 season includes: "Spitfire Grill," "The Sunshine Boys," "Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music," "Dixie Swim Club" and "Suessical The Musical."
Actors should prepare a one minute monologue of their choosing however materials will be available for a cold reading should it be necessary. If auditioning for a singing role, please prepare 32 bars of a song that showcases the voice. Auditions for "Suessical" (ages 6 through adult) musical require dancing and Carlson will have a short dance combination for this purpose. Headshots and resumes should be brought to the auditions but if these are unavailable, general information sheets will be completed and pictures taken at that time.
