Pioneer Previews for Jan. 20: Musical comedy to be presented

BEMIDJI – For those church basement ladies fans, “Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Bemidji High School auditorium. A production sponsored by the Headwaters Concert Series of the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, the musical comedy is inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson about growing up Lutheran which is actually the title of their bestselling book. The play is set in 1969 and the world is changing quickly for the ladies of the Lutheran church basement kitchen.

General seating tickets are $17 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased now at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, Minnesota Nice Café, Kelsey’s Jewelry, Shannon’s Art and Soul and Overbeek Music. Richards Publishing in Gonvick will be selling tickets through Feb. 15.

High-definition opera

The committee that has been working hard at bringing high-definition opera to Bemidji are asking people who want to be on the email list to email OperaEncoreHD@gmail.com. Just enter your name and email address in the body, no need to enter a subject.

Welcome to minnesota

The Welcome to Minnesota Tour with Atmosphere, Brother Ali and special guests will begin at 7 p.m. March 1 at the Sanford Center in Bemidji. General admission $23 tickets are on sale now at the Ford Pickup Window at the Sanford Center, 111 Event Center Drive NW; Leuken’s Ticketmaster outlets and JadePresents.com.

Monday

Auditions for the upcoming summer season for the Paul Bunyan Playhouse will be 6-9 p.m. in the historic Chief Theater, 314 Beltrami Ave. NW. For a complete listing of each production with synopsis and date, please see the Jan. 13 Pioneer Previews online at bemidjipioneer.com.

Thursday

Noted Trio Carrefour will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex, 14th St. and Birchmont Drive N. on the Bemidji State University campus. The trio is dedicated to commissioning, arranging and performing chamber music for the medium of saxophone, piano and percussion. Sax player Matthew Patnode is an associate professor of saxophone and jazz studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo. Pianist Susan Nagle is an instructor at North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead and plays for the FM Chamber Chorale. The third member of the group, Lisa Rogers, is a professor of percussion studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Her second CD, “Images,” with new works from vibraphone in solo and chamber settings will be released shortly. The public is invited to attend this free concert

-- “Canvas and Cocktails-A Paint Party for Beginners” will be offered 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Bemidji Community Arts Center, 426 Bemidji Ave. N. The class fee is $45 per person with all supplies included for this BYOB event which is open for beginners age 18 and above. Participant must be 21 to consume alcoholic beverages.

Instructor Kathy Gustafson asks that you wear comfortable, paint-friendly clothes and an apron will be provided. Call BCAC at 444-7570 to register or for further information.

-- Into to Inkle Loom Weaving with Kristen Majkzak; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday

The Bemidji Baroque Ensemble will be at 3 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall The concert is free to the public but children under the age of 6 are not encouraged to attend.

Poetry slam

Bemidji area poets can reserve a time slot now for the upcoming read by Todd Boss and slam from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 5 at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts. Call the Bemidji Public Library for more information or to register at 751-3963.
