Pioneer Previews for Jan. 13: Curtis returns as Paul Bunyan Playhouse artistic director
BEMIDJI – Paul Bunyan Playhouse announced Zach Curtis will come back as artistic director for the 2013 summer season.
There will be auditions for Bemidjians from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Chief Theater for the following shows:
-- “Guys on Ice,” by Alley and Kaplan is a romp into the companionable world of ice fishing with songs likes “Ode to the Snowmobile Suit” and “Fish is de Miracle Food.” The show opens June 5
-- “Dancing at Lughnasa” by Brian Friel is a poignant look-back to an eight-year-old boy’s summer in an Irish village as told through his adult eyes and understanding. The time of the play is set in the depth of the depression. Show opens June 19.
-- “Jekyll and Hyde” by prolific modern playwright Jeffry Hatcher. This drama closely follows the original Robert Louis Stevenson story of the man with two distinct chemically induced personalities. Show opens July 3.
“Boeing Boeing” by Marc Comoletti is a comedy-farce of a man who has to keep his three different fiancés apart with the help of his maid. The French, German and American airline attendants spend their off-time at his apartment. Show opens July 17.
-- “She Loves Me” by Masteroff, Hornick and Bock is a musical based on a play by a Hungarian writer but which has captured American audiences with its many adaptations. Two people who cannot get along in real life are actually each other’s secret pen-pal; remember the movie “You’ve Got Mail”? Show opens Aug. 10.
Auditions for “Peter Pan,” a musical based on the book by James M. Barrie with score by Piers Charter Robinson. Director Mary Knox-Johnson will be holding auditions from 4-7:30 p.m. at the historic Chief Theater, 314 Beltrami Ave. NW. Be prepared with 16 measures of music and a short monologue by thespians ages eight through eighty. Rehearsals will begin Jan. 23. Five performances are scheduled April 9-14.

Third Thursday in Park Rapids will have a variety of activities sponsored by the Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council:
-- Joanna Dymond will read from her fast paced mystery, “Crazy as a Loon” from 5-5:30 and 6-6:30 p.m. at Beagle Books, 112 3rd St. W.
-- Just Us (Dean Westby, Gene Blumberg and Rick Amsberry) will perform in their serendipitous style from 5:30-6 p.m. and 6:30-7 p.m. at Necce’s Ristorante, 311 S. Main Ave.
-- Four No More (Mark Bridge, Paul Nye and Jeff Menten) with bluegrass, new grass and classic rock from 5:30-6 and 6:30-7 p.m. at The Good Life Café, 220 S. Main Ave.
Book Signing for local author S. J. Kosko will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Book World, 316 Beltrami Ave. NW. “Logan, A Prairie Dog: Springtime Adventures in a Wish-Ton-Wish Borough” is an adventure of a prairie dog and chipmunk set in a Pre-Columbian world.
“Bemidji, the Middle Years” gala premiere will begin at 7 p.m. at the historic Chief Theatre, 314 Beltrami Ave. Free.
BCAC will be holding the following workshops Jan. 26:
-- Hand Decorating Paper with Terry Garrett; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
-- Intro to Needle Felting and Fiber Dyeing with Bonnie Lundorff; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
-- Into to Inkle Loom Weaving with Kristen Majkzak from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bemidji Baroque Ensemble concert at 3 p.m., Jan. 27 in Thompson Recital Hall.
Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra soloist’s concert, Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 25.
