BEMIDJI – The end of the semester concert for the Bemidji State University Wind Ensemble will begin at 3 p.m. today on the main stage of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex on the BSU campus. This auditioned group under the baton of Erika Svanoe, director of bands, is a fine ensemble of players whose concert are well attended and appreciated by the community at large. The two-hour concert will include the familiar circus march by Karl King, “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” “Little Prelude and fugue,” a Baroque piece by J.S. Bach and two piece of modern band literature, “At Morning’s Light” by David Gillingham and “December Dance” by Andrew Boyson, Jr.

After intermission, chamber music selections will highlight the work of smaller groups of students. The percussion ensemble will perform a piece by Michael Colgrass. Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles” will be performed by a brass and percussion ensemble. Selections from Kurt Weill’s “The Three Penny Opera” will be performed by mixed ensembles.

A consumer-friendly ticket price of $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for all students with a valid ID could help fill the auditorium to SRO status.

Another BSU group that garners an enthusiastic audience is the Varsity Singers, a non-auditioned group that sings for the joy of it. Their concert will begin at 7 p.m. Monday on the main stage of Bangsberg. Conductor Steve Reznicek will lead the singers and the audience in an old-fashioned sing-along of traditional Christmas Carols, a soloist will perform “Oh Holy Night” and there will be two break-out groups for specialty numbers. Through the years, this group has been able to bring an average of 200 pounds of donated non-perishable food items to the Bemidji Community Food Shelf after concerts.

Yes, the price of admission is a donation of perishable food items that will be delivered to the Food Shelf just in time for the holidays. Some suggestions may include brownie, cookie and cake mixes accompanied by cans of frosting.
