BEMIDJ – The Headwaters Science Center and the Bemidji Public Library are hosting their version of First Night for families Monday starting at 2 p.m. at the library and ending at the Headwaters.


The scheduled family friendly library events are as follows: 

-- 2 p.m. Crafts with Colleen; 3 and 3:30 p.m. Shadow Puppet Show with Margaret Burger and Friends; 4 p.m. a family concert with musician, singer, song writer Paul Nye. All of the events are free and open to the public at 509 America Ave. NW.

-- From 6-9 p.m., the Headwaters Science Center, 413 Beltrami Ave., will host a “Magical New Year’s Eve.” The event is a family-friendly ticket price of $10 for member families and $15 non-member families includes magic, games, special crafts, face painting, refreshments and “a ball drop with a bang.”


For a fun evening of sports-theater, the Harlem Globetrotters are bringing their brand of family-friendly shows to Bemidji at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Center. Enjoying the game of basketball is secondary to the antics of the players and a 30-minute pre-show will offer a once-in-a-life-time experience. Viewers will turn into players when they have the opportunity to spend time on the court shooting, trying out ball tricks and photo ops with the Globetrotters. Tickets are on sale now and at the event, starting at $15 each. Call the Sanford Box Office at 441-4032 to check out availability of seating.


There are only a few receptions scheduled for January First Friday.

--Gallery North will display the work of Showcase Artist Scott Fadness and his acrylic paintings. Meet the artist at the opening reception from 2-5 p.m. at 502 3rd St. NW.

-- Bemidji Public Library will welcome visitors to meet John Eggers and view his photo exhibit from 2-5 p.m. at 509 America Ave. NW.

-- Cabin Coffee House and Café will host a collection of photos by Trish Barthorpe in her installation “Whoof Da Dog Show.” Meet the artist and see if you can identify the photos of local pets from 5-7 p.m. at 214 3rd St. NW.

-- RailRiver Folk School will be hosting the installation of Samuel Staudt “Vessel’s,” a collection of oil painted glass abstract expressionistic landscapes in a high intensity color palette. Meet Staudt during the 5-7 p.m. reception at 303 Railroad SW. (Drive over the Irvine Street Bridge and turn left and drive up the hill.)

-- The Northwoods Folk Collective Open Stage, an intergenerational gathering, with host Drew Warne-Jacobson will begin with sign-ups from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and start time of 7:30 p.m. at the RailRiver Folk School.

Please note that the Bemidji Community Arts Center will be closed through January 21.

The Wild Hare Bistro and Coffee House will re-open after the New Year with current ceramic exhibit by Cyrus Swann.

Blackduck History and Art Center will be closed for the month of January.
