Pioneer Previews: BSU sets audition date for music dept., scholarships

BEMIDJI – The auditions for the Bemidji State University Department of Music entrance and scholarships will be Feb. 23, 2013 in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex.

Auditions are open to instrumentalists and vocalists interested in the BSU music program; those who will enter as freshmen or as a transfer student in the fall of 2013.
Music scholarships include full-tuition scholarships for Minnesota residents, housing scholarships, endowed scholarships, and numerous cash awards.
Students unable to present on the February date may schedule an audition on or prior to March 2, 2013. Recorded auditions will be accepted for all categories but full and half-tuition scholarships.

The deadline to apply for the Classical Minnesota Public Radio third annual Minnesota Varsity is Jan. 9. Music students ages 14-18 (grades 9-12) from across the state are invited to submit a recording of themselves performing; it does not need to be professional quality and can be as simple as a smartphone recording.
Classical and music theater vocalists, instrumental soloists and small ensembles may apply. Performances can be solo or with a group and can be up to 10 minutes in length.
For the new composition category with the American Composers Forum, student composers (same ages and grades) are invited to submit an original score for flute, oboe or clarinet of between three to seven minutes in length.

Monday
The Bemidji High School Winter Choir Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the BHS auditorium. Five different singing groups will be featured: Madrigals, Bel Conto, Men’s Choir, Varsity and A Capella. Tickets are $1 for students and $2 for adults and are sold on a first-come basis. Those who wish to attend should be aware that the auditorium doors will be locked once capacity for the room is reached.

Saturday
Visit Santa Claus and attend a free Dr. Seuss movie at 10 a.m. at the Blackduck History Center. Santa will visit with the children after the movie and receive a small gift. Parents are invited to tour the exhibits, visit the gift shop and view the work at the Tin Pan Art gALLErY.
