Pioneer Previews: Bluegrass band to perform concert at county fairgrounds

The Bluegrass Band "Special Consensus" will perform at 2 p.m. today, July 17, on the Marilyn Shutter County Stage at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds, U.S. Highway 71 N.

This is the first of many concerts, which could be performed at this venue during the summer months, if the attendance is good. Fans of bluegrass music know that this band has played to standing ovations at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and recognized as one of the premiere groups in the country. This four-man group, an acoustic band, began performing in Chicago in 1975 and started national tours after the release of their first album in 1979. Their CD "35" was released in celebration of their 35 years of performing and recording by Compass Records in 2010. The $15 tickets will be available at the door. The venue is intimate (up close and personal) and the seating is not reserved.

Church musicians

Bemidji Area Church Musicians will present musicians Joni Lund with folk flutes and strings, and Pat Riegert on guitar and dulcimer at noon, Wednesday, July 20 at the Evangelical Free Church, 115 Carr Lake Rd. S.W. A free will offering will be accepted in support of the music scholarships given each year. A luncheon will be served following the concert for a nominal cost.

Third Thursday

Third Thursday in Park Rapids will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 21, in downtown Park Rapids when David Overly will read the poem, "The Creation" by James Walden Johnson, and some Robert Frost poetry from 5-5:30 and 6-6:30 p.m. at Beagle Books, 112 Third Street W. Taylor Schroeder will play and sing folk and folk rock from 5-5:30 and 6-6:30 p.m. at The Good Life Cafe, 220 Main Ave. S. At Bella Caffè, The North Star Ensemble (Walt and Anita Hannemann, Donna Neumann and Kathy Gorentz) will perform from 5:30-6 and 6:30-7 p.m. at Bella Caffè, 116 Third Street W. The Silk Strings (Brian Keske and granddaughter Megan) will play from 5:30-6 and 6:30-7 p.m. at Blank Canvas Gallery & Education Center, 311 Main Ave. South,

A bonus this month will be the Kids Theater Camp performing "Under the Surface." The play, written by the 24 students who will then direct and act in the production will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Park Rapids Area High School auditorium, 401 Huntsinger Ave. Third Thursday events are designed to bring audiences to see and hear visual artists, musicians, writers and other artists in businesses in downtown Park Rapids on the Third Thursday of the month.

Loon Opera

Tickets are on sale now for Loon Opera Company production of Mozart's, "The Marriage of Figaro," sung in English, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30 in Thompson Recital Hall of Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex, 14th Street and Birchmont Drive. Mozart's iconic opera is a romantic comedy, which begins with Figaro and Susanna preparing for their wedding night. It is considered one of Mozart's finest and funniest operas! Walker Chorale

The Walker Area Foundation Chorale will hold its "Taste of Broadway III" fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. with a social hour and gourmet dinner. The 8 p.m. musical show will feature selections from Broadway shows and classic American tunes by the Walker Area Chorale with accompaniment by Wayne Hoff Monday, Aug. 8, at the Northern Lights Casino. Art exhibits

E Bad Cat Creations Gallery and Gifts, 315 Irvine Ave. N.W., has on display, "Put a Bird on It," a collection of pieces from artists in all media focusing on a bird theme. Bad Cat Creations is a boutique that features art and fine craft by more than 60 area artists and an eclectic collection of fun gifts and contemporary accessories.

E Bemidji Community Art Center, 426 Bemidji Ave., has two separate exhibits; Main Gallery features "A Creative Partnership," by John Kolb and Linda Acklund Kolb. He works in acrylic and she with pastels on a beeswax ground, and they complement each other with form. Photographer Sean McCroy in Gallery X2 explores a different side of our city that takes us through the overlooked alleys and side roads that have a beauty of their own in "Walking Behind Bemidji." Gift Shop 426 is open during museum hours of noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

E Bemidji Public Library Art Wall, 509 America Ave. N.W., has on display an exhibit of painting by Terry Honstead and her work, "Imagine," a collection of acrylic and mixed media based upon ideas gleaned from reading books.

E Brigid's Cross Irish Pub and Restaurant, 317 Beltrami Ave. N.W., will exhibit the work of impressionist painter Alice Blessing for the month of July. Brigid's Cross is open seven days a week.

E Cabin Coffeehouse and Café, 214 Third St. N.W., has two exhibits on display: watercolor painter and illustrator Audrey Merschman and wildlife photographer Cheryl Windels for the month of July. Merschman is the resident artist at the cabin and has a display of cards and paintings for sale. The cabin is open seven days a week.

E Dunn Bros Coffee, 501 Paul Bunyan Drive S., welcomes painter Pat Shough/Sillimandi and her newer works: landscapes, flowers and birds. Dunn Bros is open seven days a week.

E Fleur de Lis Gallery, 501 Bemidji Ave., display, "Navigating the Aftermath: The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project," will run from July 1-14. Co-sponsored by Bemidji Community Arts Center and Saarens Productions, this traveling art exhibit explores Iraq's present and future.

E Gallery North, 502 Third St. S.W., showcase artist for July is Joan Wilson, who paints portraits, outdoor landscapes and is also a photographer. Featured gallery artist of the month is Marion Reil, watercolor instructor and painter. For more information see galleryn@paulbunyan.net.

E Neilson Place, 1000 Anne St. N.W., welcomes artist Mary Lingen whose display will remain in place July-October. A price list of her work will be at the front desk.

E Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse, 523 Minnesota Ave. N.W., welcomes Maureen O'Brien and her acrylics on canvas and prints on metal substrate which focus on the serenity of the northern Minnesota forest. Wild Hare is closed Sunday.

E Yellow Umbrella, 202 Third St. N.W., features the work of local artisans: wood carvings, prints, watercolors, photos, etc.

E Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, 519 Minnesota Ave. N.W., has on display works of watercolor artist Judy Selby.

E Tutto Bene, 300 Beltrami Ave. N.W., a restaurant and art gallery, has an ongoing display of artwork The restaurant is closed Sunday.

E The Tourist Information Center, 300 Bemidji Ave. by the statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe, has a map and information on the pieces included in the Bemidji Sculpture Walk.
