Pioneer Previews: Bemidji Area Communty Band at new location for concert today

Bemidji Area Community Band moves to new location for their concert today at 7 p.m. BACB will be playing on the south lawn at Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex on the campus of Bemidji State University, 14th St. and Birchmont Dr. N. The concert will honor two members who passed away this year, Jerry Ekberg and Don McKinnon. Under the direction of Erika Svanoe, the program will include tributes to both men: "Benny Goodman: The King of Swing" for Ekberg and "Over the Rainbow" for Don McKinnon. The program will also include selections from the musical, "Wicked," and the movie, "Titanic" with some rousing marching band music by Sousa and Goldman. The concert is free and open to the public and a free will offering will be accepted. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move inside to Thompson Recital Hall.

The Lake Bemidji Summer Concert Series will showcase father and son folk duo, Doyle and Tony Turner beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the amphitheatre at the Lake Bemidji State Park. Admission to the park requires a current sticker and one-day passes are available. The concert is open to the public at no charge because this series is funded by a Region 2 Arts Grant.

The 25th Anniversary Bemidji Area Church Musician Summer Concert series will begin at noon, Wednesday at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 1800 Irvine Ave. NW. The recital will showcase the Eve Sumsky (horn) who will be joined by Bonnie Swanson(horn), Lizette Grinden (violin) and Becky Haugen(piano) for an eclectic selection of music from the second half of the 18th century to the present. Works include music from composers Rohan Kriwaczec, C. W. Gluck, Edward S. Solomon, G. Faure, J.S. Bach, Gunther Schuller and Lowell E. Shaw.

All of the concerts are open to the public and free-will offerings will be accepted for the BACM Scholarship fund. A post-concert luncheon will be provided at a minimal cost, a service of each member church to support their fund raising efforts.

Café Accordion Orchestra "Berets and Bongos," an eclectic musical experience for all ages will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at HSMA, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. This event is co-sponsored by the Bemidji Public Library and HSMA and free and open to the public.

"Madama Butterfly," by Puccini, by the Loon Opera Company will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on June 28 and 30 at the BHS auditorium. A fully staged opera with English super titles, orchestra and chorus, more information about the singers can be found at loonoperacompany.com. Tickets are $25 each and on sale now at Kelsey's Jewelry in downtown Bemidji or by calling 368-8805. This production is made possible in part by grants from the Region 2 arts Council and the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.

"The Sunshine Boys," by Neil Simon will be the second play of the season for the Paul Bunyan Playhouse. Opening at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the performance times are the same for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 24. The comedy revolves around two famous comics, once best friends and now bitter enemies, attempts to get ready for a television show showcasing the glory days of vaudeville. The performance times for the following week, ending June 30, will be 8 p.m. Located in the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji , the tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for students with a valid ID. "Over the River and Through the Woods," a comedy by Joe Dipietro is playing through the end of June at the Long Lake Theater in Hubbard. Check the website at longlaketheater.com for performance times and dates or call (218) 732-0099.

Second Street Stage events will run from 6-8 p.m. Thursday with Circle of Heat, a Minneapolis-based band with a heavy focus on musicality and improvisation in blues to classic rock.

Paul Bunyan Auditions for students in grades 4 through college will be held for "The Legend of Paul Bunyan, a musical by Verna Safran. Director Cate Belleveau will audition actors from 4:30- p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Contact kayakc2@me.com for location, time slot and day. Performance dates are Aug. 3-5 and 9-11 at the Bemidji High School auditorium.

The First City Singers, a group that rehearses at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, is a non-auditioned senior chorus program that meets weekly from 1-2 p.m. on Mondays. The group performs regularly in the community. They are looking for new members and offer a singing opportunity for those interested in a choral experience. Call 444-5606 for more information.

The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra Guild is looking for volunteers to design tables and donate desserts for this year's event to be held on September. 21 at the Hungry Bear Banquet and Conference Center, 2300 24th St. NW. "Painting Crystal in Watercolor" with June Young from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday at the Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center, 311 Main Ave. S. Park Rapids. Local watercolor artist Jane Freeman will offer artists a three-day workshop on watercolor painting June 28-30 in the Beltrami Electric Cooperative community meeting room.

The Bemidji Affiliate of the American Swedish Institute will celebrate its annual Midsommar Fest on Saturday from 12:30-4:30 in Library Park on Lake Bemidji. The event is free and open to the public with musical groups, activities for children and traditional Swedish food for sale. The Grand March will begin at 2 p.m. with Midsommer Queen, Judy Dvorak. In case of rain, the activities will move to the Beaux Arts Ballroom on the campus of BSU.

Bemidji Public Library Summer 2012 Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 27 and 28 at the Bemidji National Guard Armory, 1430 23rd St. NW. Friends of the Library Early Bird specials from 4-7 p.m., June 26.

Bemidji artist and author Alice Blessing will be reading from her children's book beginning at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 27 at the park Rapids Community Education After-School program. Free and open to the public.
