Pioneer Previews for Aug. 18: Blue Bird notes at Lake Bemidji State Park

Fall is already in the air with clean, fresh scents remindful of the clean fresh notes the ladies of Blue Bird always bring to the stage at the Lake Bemidji State Park Concert Series.

Jes Conrad, Kari Munson and Anne Meredith-Will will share their music in some old favorites and new music selections. The concert at 2 p.m. today will be in the amphitheater, which is accessible by foot, boat or car. Bring lunch or snacks and prepare to be soothed by Blue Bird's tight rhythms and original music in a family friendly atmosphere -- pets are even welcome. The summer series is underwritten by the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts and the Region 2 Arts Council. Admission to the concert is free for those with a yearly park pass or buy a $5 daily pass at the front gate. No rain dates for these concerts as they just move up the trail to the Visitor's Center.

• If going to see theater matinees has become a habit this summer, plan on going to see "The Importance of Being Earnest" at 2 p.m. today., presented by the Exciting Play Society and underwritten by Bemidji Community Theater, on the main stage of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex on the campus of Bemidji State University, Fourteenth Street and Birchmont Drive North. Tickets at the door for the comedy are $10 general public and $5 for students 17 and younger.

Tuesday

•The 2nd Annual Mississippi River Music Armada will be held at 7 p.m. at Bemidji State Park.

Wednesday

• Bemidji Area Church Musicians will welcome visitors to their concert at noon at Aardahl Lutheran Church, 2920 Van Buren Ave. SE. Presented by Wayne Hoff (organ) and Carol L. Johnson (piano), the program will include piano and organ solos and duets. A free will offering will be accepted in support of their scholarship program, to be followed by a luncheon at a minimal fee. Aardahl Church is located two miles east of Paul Bunyan Drive on Roosevelt Road and then a mile south on Van Buren Avenue

• Bemidji Community Theater will welcome visitors and members to an open house at 6 p.m. at the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji to be followed by their annual meeting. The meeting will cover a short review of the past season, a presentation of the upcoming season and the treasurer's report. This is also the meeting when board members are re-elected and new board members are nominated from the floor by members. Dues are payable at annual meeting: $15 family and $10 individual. Light refreshments will be served.

Thursday

•Folk rock musicians Bigtree Bonsai will close the summer season of the 2nd Street Stage event from 6 to 8 p.m. Sponsored by the Park Rapids Downtown Business Association, 2nd Street Stage offers free live bands, a beer garden and family activities on 2nd St. between Main Ave. and U.S. 71. Don't forget to bring your own chair.

Friday

• Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center will be hosting an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. at 311 Main St. S. In addition to the featured artist of the month, Janine Merrick, five new guest artists will be presented. Open to the public at no charge.

• A free will offering concert in support of the scholarship program at HSMA will be performed at 7 p.m. by Melanie Hanson (violin), Andrew Green (violin) and Gwenfrewi Burger (cello). The chamber group will be playing string trios of Mozart, Boccherini and Borodin.

• Writer's Workshop with Susan Carol Hauser: "Contracts & Copyright: Traditional, Self - and E-Publishing Service." This is a repeat for the workshop given during the Bemidji Library Book Festival. • Bemidji Area Arts Endowment has tickets on sale now for the 10th Annual Oom Pah for the Arts fundraiser at ReMax of Bemidji, 602 Beltrami Ave. NW. This event is the major fundraiser in support of scholarships and underwriting for arts events in the Bemidji area. The event is Oct. 4 at the Bemidji Town and Country Club, the evening includes a wine and beer tasting at 6 p.m. to be followed by a German dinner menu and music by "Tuba" Jim Thompson, Dennis Doeden and Friends. Seating is limited and early ticket purchase is encouraged. Tickets are $50 each which includes a $35 tax deductible donation to BAAE, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.

• Tickets for Desserts by Design, a fundraiser for the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, must be purchased in advance by Sept. 1. A diamond anniversary gala with artistically designed tables enhanced by fancy desserts, entertainment by members of the BSO, silent and live auctions to help underwrite the 2013-14 season.
