Pioneer Previews: Artistic Ambassador Competition Tour has upcoming regional stops
Winners of the 2012 Artistic Ambassador Competition will tour local schools this week, showcasing their award-winning instrumental talents. The competition and accompanying tour honors excellence in solo and duo instrumental performance at the college level.
The tour includes Bemidji State University pianist Matthew Sieberg, Concordia College pianist Shu-Min (Alice) Chang, University of Minnesota saxophonist Jeffrey Hutchins, University of Minnesota violinist Eric Olson and University of Minnesota pianist Eun-Hye Grace Choi. Tour members will perform and speak briefly about their choice of repertoire.
These musicians will perform at 2 p.m. Thursday at Northern Elementary School and at 7:30 p.m. at the Bangsberg Recital Hall on the BSU campus. On Friday, they will perform at 8:45 a.m. at TrekNorth School and at 10:30 a.m. at Clearbrook-Gonvick High School Friday.
The third annual Opener Art Festival's booth registration is now open. The festival will be Nov. 3 at the Sanford Center. The fee is $75 for a 10' x 10' booth plus $15 processing fee. Nature artists are invited to take part in the 2012 Lady Slipper Celebration art walk "Art Around Town" in Blackduck June 23. The event will celebrate the arts, culture, nature and history of the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway that stretches from Blackduck toward Cass Lake. Registration for the event is $20, and ends May 15. Region 2 Arts Council's Artist Mentor Grant Program deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday. R2AC is offering grants up to $600 each for students in grades 8-12 who live in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties. Students in the program are paired with a local artist who acts as a personal mentor and teacher. To apply, visit www.r2arts.org. Marion Caroline will lead a watercolor painting workshop entitled, "Field of Dreams," at 1 p.m. April 25 at Gallery North. Registration for this workshop is currently open, and can be completed at Gallery North. The class fee is $45, with all necessary materials provided.
Blue Ox Bar and Grill will host Dead Larry at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Long Doe Camp with Rez Rap and Emcee Edge at 10 p.m. Friday and Party Spark at 10 p.m. Saturday. All concerts are free and open to the public.
The Cabin Coffeehouse and Café will have its monthly open mike from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
The 2012 Bemidji State University Department of Visual Arts Scholarship Show is now open at Talley Gallery. The exhibit features works by students awarded scholarships this year through the department, and is based around the theme of consumption. The Talley Gallery, located in the Education Arts building on the BSU campus, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Entry is free.
Local author and speaker John Eggers will talk about his recent book at 7 p.m. Monday in the Bemidji Public Library.
Auditions for "The Sound of Music" through Northern Light Opera Company will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker and Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. Bemidji Community Theater, in conjunction with the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, will present "The Magical Pied Piper" at the Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday. Common Ground program explores the creative process and cultural events in our region. On this week's episode, Charles Kapsner of Little Falls begins an extensive project that will honor the men and women of our armed services with murals depicting each branch of the military. The program broadcasts at 7 p.m. Thursday and will be repeated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
