Pioneer Previews: Always popular Art in the Park returns

The Watermark Art Center and Paul Bunyan Communications present one of Bemidji's most popular events this week -- "Art in the Park" -- which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The 47th Park Fine Art and Craft Festival will once again be staged on the shore of Lake Bemidji in Library Park. More than 100 artists and vendors will showcase ceramics, wood furniture and accessories, glass paintings, fabrics, weaving, jewelry, paintings, etc. Vendors will sell great food and there will be music by Pat Surface in the Spiritwood Music Tent all day, both days. Families will enjoy puppet performances by the Fortuna Puppet Theatre on Saturday. Jens Werner will do some fantastic face painting and henna tattoos. Artists from Two Eyes Weaving Studio will be demonstrating and providing hands-on weaving opportunities. String players from Bemidji Symphony Orchestra will play during the day, organizers said. • Lou Samsa is playing guitar and singing at 1:30 p.m. today in the amphitheatre at Lake Bemidji State Park. Admission is free but a one day pass for $5 is required if you don't have an annual park pass. These concerts are a collaborative effort of LBSP and the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts.

• Opening this week at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse is "The 39 Steps," a melodrama primarily based on Alfred Hitchcock films: " Strangers on a Train," "Rear Window," " Psycho," "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest." This spy story is played by four actors and features more than 100 costume changes requiring lightning-quick changes; the play is comedic in nature with allusions and puns. Opening night ticket price is $17 for adults; the same as Sunday matinees. Tickets are $22 for adults and $12 for students and can be purchased online at www.thechieftheater.com or at the box office, call (218) 751-7270. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. And stay for the opening night reception.

• The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents an evening of Jae, Jazz and More at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bemidji High School Performing Arts Center. The opening concert of the 2014-15 season — "A Perfect 10," celebrating the 10th anniversary of maestro Beverly Everett as musical director of the BSO. The Jae Sinnett Trio will join the BSO. Season tickets are $60 and, if purchased prior to this concert, a complimentary ticket for this concert is included. Tickets may be purchased through the BSO website, www.bemidjisymphony.org, both Lueken's Fine Foods, the Chamber of Commerce and Headwaters School of Music and the Arts.

Wednesday

• The Bemidji Area Church Musicians Summer Recital Series continues at noon, St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 1800 Irvine Ave. NW. Beverly Everett returns for her much anticipated organ concert with the following program: works by French composers and organists Henri Mulet and Louis Vierne, German composer J.S. Bach. Everett will also play a composition by her organ professor at Baylor University, Joyce Jones. A free-will offering will be accepted to support music scholarships awarded each year to a freshman/sophomore college student majoring in music. The concert is from noon to 12:30 p.m. to be followed by a luncheon for a nominal fee.

• The Fattenin' Frogs will play at 2nd Street Stage in Park Rapids from 6 to 8 p.m. sponsored by the Park Rapids Downtown Business Association and State Bank. The Fattenin' Frogs play rock and roll music in its original spirit by turning up the intensity on traditional American music. 2nd Street Stage continues from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 21 -- rain or shine -- with free live bands, a beer garden and family activities on 2nd Street between Main Avenue and Highway 71 (at Armory Square if it rains). • A Taste of Broadway Goes Diamonds to Denim, a fundraiser for the Walker Area Foundation, will be held on Aug. 18 at the Northern Lights Hotel Event Center. The event will introduce the Northernaires Barbershop Quartet (Rick James, Mike Kerrigan, Kelly Nelson and Scott Bruns).
