Festivals, fairs, and much more

Birchmont Golf Tournament, Bemidji County Fair, Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival, Mississippi Duck Races, Shop 'Til You're Draggin' Crazy Daze, "Greater Tuna" at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse. What wasn't happening in Bemidji last weekend? Residents and visitors had to schedule to keep up with the plethora of activities. The great thing was that everyone could take in everything he or she was interested in because the timetables allowed watching the Dragon Boats with side trips to the Beltrami County Fair and Crazy Daze. The Duck Races tucked in between Dragon Boat heats, and "Greater Tuna" opened in the evening. Don't let anyone say there's a lack of fun stuff to do in Bemidji.

Major event

A Beltrami County Fair addition has taken off with a flourish. The Bake Off, which focuses on local products of wild rice and blueberries this year, with the addition of exotic chocolate, has evolved from a sideline with a handful of participants to a major event. Congratulations to the 45 competitors who came up with novel recipes for the judges to choose from and for the audience to share. Tiny tomatoes stuffed with a wild rice filling sound exquisite.

Not 'Harvey'

Steven Spielberg plans a remake of "Harvey" for his next film, a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play about a man and his friendship with an invisible, 6-foot tall rabbit. "Harvey" was first adapted for the screen in 1950 with James Stewart in the starring role as Elwood P. Dowd. He received an Oscar nomination, while Josephine Hull took the prize for her supporting role. The idea that a contemporary "Harvey" could eclipse the classic is absurd. Spielberg should put his great imagination to new material rather than a likely futile effort to improve on the best.

Iowans prevail

The Cedar River Gang, foreigners from down south in Iowa, where real summer humidity and heat sweat and sizzle, braved a chilly Saturday to win the 2009 Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival races. Welcome to all veteran Dragon Boat paddlers and every new team converging with support crews as the event has become tradition. Congratulations to the Bemidji Rotary Club and the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce for bringing this great festival to our community.
