Duluthians show their community spirit
Federal and state officials are descending on northeastern Minnesota after a powerful storm dumped up to 10 inches of rain along the North Shore, leaving a powerful swath of destruction throughout the region.
In its wake, the storm left a trail of harrowing survival stories, damaged homes and businesses, and destroyed roads and bridges. Preliminary damage estimates range from $95 million to $115 million for public structures and roads in Duluth, St. Louis County and the state's highways.
The estimate will increase as damage in other counties and private property become available.
Seeing the images, it's a surprise no lives were lost.
It will take months, perhaps years, to rebuild.
Our neighbors to the east have tremendous community spirit, and their efforts are buoyed by the morale support and help we can provide.
Minnesotans are a hearty bunch.
Let's hope the state and federal policymakers provide the financial commitment to provide resources to help rebuild and recover.
As private citizens, we can do our part by listening to the message Duluth put out before the water receded: Duluth remains open for tourism.

Unclear future
The question of annexation remains up in the air for Bemidji, Northern Township and Bemidji Township.
Last week, Bemidji Township officials resisted efforts between the city and Northern Township to speed up annexation for Northern Township and an amendment giving two pieces of land back to Bemidji Township. The three-way deal struck earlier requires each party to agree to the terms.
Now the fallout from the squabble appears headed to court - and a lengthy process with no clear answers.

The Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival starts Friday and presents our community a chance to celebrate its history and culture.
The carnival, with events planned through July Fourth, is an opportunity to participate in events for the entire family.
